brazoseagle Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 I'm interested in hearing your opinions, research and/or experiences in the negative effect on the cigars, if any, of long term storing cigar boxes vertically. Feel free to post reports, or links that do discuss the science behind this if you know of any. I have been told both that it has a negative effect and I've been told it doesn't, 50/50. I am very interested in this, i've pondered this topic for a ling time. Disclaimer: There are going to be those of you that inevitably will remark, " Don't worry about long term aging, life is short, smoke 'em if you got em." That's not really what I'm looking for, nor is it my shared philosophy. I've invested a lot in specific boxes of cigars with specific box dates to commemorate milestones in my life. I hope to long term age these, 18 year plus), so I can enjoy with my son when he graduates, get's married, and has kids of his own. I have yet to really hear anything definitive. Those that say it has a negative effect claim that the oils will eventually travel to the lower end of the cigar. Not sure if I buy into that without any evidence. Your input is appreciated This may get lost among all of the recent reviews, but feel free to bump it up when necessarily. Ray, please chime in at will! Thanks!
Fuzz Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Why do I hear the music from Tetris running through my head when I read this post... 2
Styler Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Those that say it has a negative effect claim that the oils will eventually travel to the lower end of the cigar. Surely by that logic, if you store your cigars horizontally then the oils will travel down to the lowest point in the cigar and you would see a dark line running along the bottom where the oil has gathered? 2
gigabyte056 Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 I have smoked cigars left by my late father, and I am talking 1980-1998 cigars stored whichever way he could cram them into a converted cabinet. They were stored horizontally, vertically and by a fluke of chance he only smoked 3 types of cigars, so I had the ability to test boxes from the same year stored both ways. I with my limited palate could not tell the differences and I have smoked over a 150 cigars stored either each way. Regarding oils, have not seen any difference in the horizontal and vertical cigars, none had any marks of oils building up or such. only problem was when I opened a box stored sideways, I have noticed that the two lower cigars had been really pressed in, so I smoked till I could release them from captivity. 1
Zigatoh Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Jars tend to be vertical storage as well don't they? You'd hope the makers would know what they're doing and that this wouldn't have an adverse effect... 1

Not sure if I buy into that without any evidence. Who could have told you that? This must be the dumbest statement I've ever heard about cigars… If the oils undergo gravity, how do they appear all around cigars, including the upper side, in dress boxes?
beamer Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Why do I hear the music from Tetris running through my head when I read this post... My humidor usually looks like a Tetrris game. I've stored vertically for over a few years with no detectable issues.

jb2jb Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Hay I do it because I'm tight for space.I collect a lot of cigars I age, and there is no difference. I have cigars pre embargoed that are just fine.I have been doing this for a very long time. When time to smoke they are perfect. Best Jared
maverickdrinker Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 The only thing I would worry about when storing cigars vertically is head or foot damage. 1

jedipastor Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 I've heard the same thing (urban legend?) about not storing cigars vertically. I can't see it mattering unless you're talking about extreme long-term storage, like 50 years or something. I don't think I'll have anything that long, so I don't worry about it.
LGC Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 I like to store my cigars with the feet down... so that I get more flavors earlier on in the smoke Seriously... the oils will migrate, and the cigar will age the same at positions of 15, 34, 54 and 0 degrees from horizontal.
Smallclub Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Have you considered a career in diplomacy? Diplomacy is for sissies Seriously, why would they release top level products in jars if this conditioning were detrimental to cigars in the long term?
jacktarnold Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 For me I haven't tried. However I also haven't had the need but I can't see why or how it would negatively affect the cigar.

How old are the cigars you collect that you age? Just trying to set a frame of reference.
Puros Y Vino Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Diplomacy is for sissies Seriously, why would they release top level products in jars if this conditioning were detrimental to cigars in the long term? You keep your jars upright!?!? They're supposed to be laid on their side so they can rest like their brethren in cheap cedar boxes. 1
Colt45 Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 I only , ONLY, store my cigars in an anti-gravity vacuum chamber. For peak freshness. I doubt it really matters
LeafLover Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 In my experience, doesn't hurt and it doesn't help. Same difference.
CanuckSARTech Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 You keep your jars upright!?!? They're supposed to be laid on their side so they can rest like their brethren in cheap cedar boxes. Which side??
Habanos2000 Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 Don't hold your breath waiting for any scienfic studies on something like this. If storing the cigars vertically made a difference then wouldn't there also be a difference if the boxes were stored upside down compared to right side up? There is no difference how they lay.
Habanakane21 Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 I like to store my boxes at a 42 degree angle. Then every 2 weeks move them up to a 47 degree angle. Repeat every second Sunday of the month.
ZinZan Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 I remember seeing a video CA about pre 1900s cigar, the cigars were stored in the cabinet vertically
