Just picked up a well aged 2008 box of Coloniales. I have smoked a few Trinidads but never a Coloniales. I will smoke a few for QC measures.

What shoudld I expect?

Had about four already. I found them to be the most "robust" in flavour of all the Trini's I've tried (Reyes, Rob T's) Expect a bit of strength, strong coffee notes in particular. Overall a rich tasting IMO. Very enjoyable.

I smoked one today from my 2007 box! I have to echo Frank's comments - the strongest of the Trinidad line, they are rich, strong cigars loaded with Coffee and earth. A good cigar, if you like strength and depth!

I'm about a third of the way through a box of '06. These took some time to come around, but it was worth the wait. If they don't delight, put them away for another year or two.

For me, they don't hold a candle to the Reyes or the Robusto T. Not bad, but not exceptional.

Another example of our violent agreement, Van. Except you forgot to add Fundadores to thems these don't hold a candle to.

Have never been a fan, as big a Trinidad fan as I am, but I think CaptainQuintero finally nailed what it was that I don't

like. That tea thing is spot on. Not that I don't like tea-taste in my cigars. I just don't like it in my Trinidads.

These are excellent with 3+ years of age. Don't understand the comparison with the Reyes. Very similar profile with similar box age. Coloniales can be under-filled. Worth getting a hand-selected box.

Robo T. RIP. Won't be missed by this trini fan.

The verdict is in. Great smoke. Mind you my experience with Trinidad is limited to the Ingenios EL 2007. Did taste the tea leaves and alot of spicy pepper in the first third.

These were the first Trinidad that I tried and was confused when nothing else in the line had that same tea lol, how were the Ingenios? I never got around to trying those.

Frankly I thought the Ingenios were mediocre. Certainly wouldnt have paid for them and if I had I would have been disappointed. I first smoked them about one year ago from a few 12 count boxes by wife let me get my dirty hands on. For what we sell them in my shop (more than a CoRo, less than a Sig VI) I wouldnt buy them. The Coloniales, yes I would!

La 5ta Habanos Blog Review

Trinidad Coloniales – 10-Jan-2012

Origin: Cuba

Format: Corona

Size: 44 x 132

First Impression: Nicely constructed. Nice firm draw, aroma at cold smelled of tea leaves and some very slight floral notes. This cigar is from a mid 2008 box.

Opening: This is a strong cigar. It shows its strength right away. I had heard from my favorite (and only) cigar forum (friendsofhabanos.com) that I might expect a tea leaf character in this vitola – they were dead on. Normally I associate that taste with lighter cigars, but it works well in this strong cigar. I am not very experienced with Trinidads, only having smoked several Ingenios from a 2007 EL release. This is a pretty big departure from that cigar.

First Third: Tea leaves, but with a very peppery spice overtone. Interesting combo. Even burn, good draw, nice volume of smoke.

Second Third: Strength balancing out a bit – still strong at medium full, but not so in your face as it was. Tea leaves remain but the peppery character is gone leaving behind a creamy tea flavor.

Final Third: Strength coming on a bit, now pretty much full as the cigar picks up steam and heads into the home stretch. Still the tea leaf notes, but now with a smokey woody flavor which is pretty subtle.

Conclusions: I like this cigar very much. Taste, size, strength. The feedback from my favorite cigar forum (friendsofhabanos.com) were pretty much 50-50. Not that half hated the cigar, but that they felt it didn’t live up to others in this marca, such as Reyes and Robusto T. Since my Trinidad experience is thin, this was very enjoyable and didn’t fall short of expectations.

Had one tonight - messed up the wrapper badly but it was still tasty. AGR JUN 10 box code so still a little rough. Quite strong and earthy. Have not had an underfilled one from this box.

It's like this. When I have friends who are non-cuban smokers who want to try a cuban, I hand them a Coloniales. It's robust, rich, half n half creamy, cedary, cashewy, hints of mild cocoa and vanilla bean, light sweet grass (cashew/sweet grass/cocoa/vanilla = hong kong milk tea which we are experiencing, imo). As if they took all the best parts of a HdM Epi Esp, CoRo, Monte Edmundo, and made a super cigar. Slap an EL band on it and you would have gotten a reaction akin to the RA E reception.

There's nothing "light" about this cigar. All flavors are full on. Those who would argue that it is, mistake the intense creaminess as "subtlety." Look past that quality the cigar impresses on the palate, and you will realize how full on this cigar is. I think you'd be lying to yourself if you didn't think this cigar was going to age well. Top ROTT performer currently and certainly a great aging potential in my opinion. OUS / OUR 08/09 I had were great boxes. Easily a low 80s currently with prospect of climbing to high 80s.
