dB69 Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 H.Upmann Half Corona Didn't notice to check the box code when bought three try-outs yesterday, but it can't be nothing but very young. Drink: Coke. Music: Tito Puente's Night Beat. Firm and smooth construction. Colorado wrapper looking very nice. Cold smell very mild with sour tobacco and a touch of leather. Cutting with scissors. Medium draw, perhaps a little on the open side. Fine tobacco with a little bit of chili and ginger as cold taste. 1/3 Ginger and white pepper. Very spicy. Sour tobacco in a good way. Pepper is very strong. Ginger again. Body and flavour medium to full. 2/3 Pepper has gone away. Strong and dark flavoured tobacco. Some tar. Some kind of "dark youth" sensed. Medium body and flavour. 3/3 Some pepper and spiciness wakes up again. Toasted tobacco and bread. Some herbal notes. Black pepper. Lots of toastiness. Some thyme with tarry sweetness. Body and flavour medium to full. Lots of nicotine. Toasted tobacco aftertaste. Firm ash as you can see. Good burn overall. Smoking time 45 minutes, yes I'm slow. Very nice little stick! I was amazed of its strength, much stronger than I expected. I somehow assume that this cigar will change a lot if aged. Very good to smoke young though. I will buy these and certainly give my recommendation.
Hohenthal Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Thanks for that review! I am a big fan of small cigars in general and Upmann quality in a somewhat stronger blend is something I certainly look forward to try myself! Thanks again, Alex
riazp Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 looking foward to these for sure, will make an exellent quick smoke...i'm a slow smoker myself...usually takes me 40 to 50 mins for a petit corona or mareva.
mbrody Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Thank you for the review...excited to try them!
Habanos2000 Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 Thanks for the review! I'm a big Upmann fan and have yet to try this vitola. I prefer corona gordas or robustos but you did make this stick sound interesting enough that I'll keep it in mind.
tdlfoto Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 i've smoked about 4 now and would concur with your review. enjoying these very much
Omskakas Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 Thanks for the review. I like Upmanns, so I have to try them out.
canadianbeaver Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 I just bought a box and also just found out my cousin brought me some from Cuba... so FOH's who smoke with me on the roof at Park Hyatt? We have some to smoke!!
Tarks Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 Thanks for the review. I had a chance to smoke a handful of these last week in Havana and I did not have one that I enjoyed. That seemed to be the theme for the group I was travelling with. I know they are very, very young so I will try them again next time I'm in Havana. I hope they come around. I love the small RG cigars.
Professor Twain Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Eager to try these. Rob, do you think you will get any of the tins of these? I collect those and would love to pick a couple of those up.

dB69 Posted December 12, 2011 Author Posted December 12, 2011 ...very un hpmann like which is a shame as h upmann have really been on there game recently I smoked one more last week and it was quite similar with the one I reviewed, and as a reference I smoked a young M46 yesterday. I have to say I agree with your words. Upmanns are usually milder and not so peppery, or at least those few I have smoked. However, it doesn't make these little ones bad anyhow IMO. Me likes!
Cigarjunkie Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 This is a great little cigar. Bought a box last week and smoked 6 already. Very consistent taste al over the box. Still (obviously) very young though. reminder to oneself: buy another box and stash in the back of the cabinet :-) It is also a great value for money cigar!
Puros Y Vino Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 I just bought a box and also just found out my cousin brought me some from Cuba... so FOH's who smoke with me on the roof at Park Hyatt? We have some to smoke!! Cool! Lisa I smoked the one you gave me on my trip and I really enjoyed it. It was smooth. There was a bit of Sir Winston in it. For a little cigar the flavour range was very good. Some coffee, toasty tobacco, dried fruit notes and leather. I might need a box myself.
karmaz00 Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 smoked a few in Havana last week...i was excited to try them only to be let down.... they tasted very young to me...id like to revisit them in a couple years to give them another shot
Reaver2145 Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 I had one of these last night and TBH the first thing i thought when i looked at them was "did they just cut a normal corona in half" but hay from the offset i found it to be somewhat in your face defiantly spicy, woody with some leather and lashings of smoke and about half way through there was a nice good bitter chocolate/espresso taste to it BUT there was a harshness to it ill say because its what a month maybe two old (i got 3 singles instead of a box) I think once these go away for at least a year they will be a nice little stick but untill then for this winter ill be content with san Punch Petite Punch and el principies.
adic88 Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 I enjoyed these as well, my full review http://mycigarblog.org/blog/?p=2459
canadianbeaver Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 I totally agree with the age comment, and if I can resist and show some discipline, I am on it.
thecrowder Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 Thanks for the review! I'm looking forward to giving these a try.
hidechen Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Looking forward to try this new babes in a few weeks
CanuckSARTech Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 It didn't seem like anyone really liked these this past weekend up in Montreal. Those that tried it seemed to pitch them, IIRC.

Interesting, too ordinary maybe? Did you try to find out what was wrong or did you just pour another drink? Let me guess you must have had quite a terrific selection of fine cigars to smoke there. I hope you had fun time. It seems that many people like these little sticks but some really don't. Quite a divider then, should I say.
Lotusguy Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 It didn't seem like anyone really liked these this past weekend up in Montreal. Those that tried it seemed to pitch them, IIRC. Yup, I was one of them... I'll give it another chance (especially, since I won two of them in the C&C raffle) but for sure not a box purchase for me at this time. WHERE ARE THE RG PERLAS ALREADY?????

Quite a divider then, should I say. LOL. Not enough to drink actually! I did try to find out - the few people that I noticed smoking these, with different codes/boxes/sources/etc., said it seemed harsh/sour/unrefined. But, flavours and opinions are selective, and these are also so new. The format and marca aren't really a huge draw for me, so discussions about these sticks just became part of the weekend banter. To each his own. Hopefully, these do improve for those that have them and weren't enjoying them from the get-go. Cheers.
jazzbass Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 This is one cigar I can't wait to try out. I have to agree in that H. Upmann has been very steady these last few years. The Upmann No 2 continues to get rave reviews but a small cigar, such as the Half Corona sounds like just what we've all been waiting for. Any idea what a box of these goes for in Cuba??
