bacalao Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 I'm the type on of person that goes to a restaurant finds a dish he likes and never stop ordering it . No matter how good the specials of the day might sound. In short I don't want to be disappointed. I'm new to the world of Cuban cigars and have fallen in love with Hupmanns. I want to experiment with lesser know marcas but I am afraid of falling in love with a cigar on the habanos chopping block. Curious to know how you veterans out there have handled your go to stick being discontinued in the past. Do you smoke another size in that brand, make calls to every dealer you know until you have bought them all, or just find a new favorite. Thanks Jose
dochowl Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 Easiest thing to do is stick to Cohiba and Montecristo... preferably the large ring gauges. We know HSA doesn't cut anything from those lines, especially if they are sized like coke cans. Stay away from sticks 44rg and below. And if HSA kills your favorite cigars (like they did mine x6 in 2010), stock up while available (go deep into debt if needed), learn to ration for the long term, and cry a little bit each day (this really helps with the emotional side of the loss). RIP Bolivar Inmensas, Partagas SdC1,2,3, and every other thin ring gauge cigar that has met an untimely death.
laficion Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 . Curious to know how you veterans out there have handled your go to stick being discontinued in the past. I've been smoking cubans for now 40 years, I've had cigars that I thought I would be smoking all my life, Dunhills, Davidoffs, MarÃa Guerrero , Gisperts, La Escepcion, etc etc. All of these have disappeared and more, but I'm still smoking some great cigars. NOTHING lasts forever, you'll always find better or, at least, just as good. Above all, don't always content yourself with one thing but be curious about everything. A French painter once said" It's not enough to put some life in your Art, you will also need to put some Art in your life".

cigcars Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 *Well, acceptance is the best tool for us persons on suicide watch having been deprived of our Habana lovelies. Just have to make due with what's available...*grumble grumble grumble* I do know where to find some discontinueds, but as we're begrudged even a jar of vaseline at the gas pumps, my remaining budget seldom allows for more splurging these days.
stogieokie Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 Jose, I feel your pain. Given that I frequently don't have much time to smoke my "go-to's" are typically petite coronas. I was devastated to hear that HSA was nuking Diplo 4's--at least it appears that there are quite a few of those still in the channel. I wasn't so lucky with SLRPC's, which I only recently discovered. I would have loved to find a cab, but they're virtually non-existent now even in dress boxes. My advice is to try and diversify as much as you can. I like Monte 4's and PLPC's as well and hopefully those won't be going anywhere soon. And if you wait long enough they'll be reintroduced as an LE!
bacalao Posted April 27, 2011 Author Posted April 27, 2011 Thanks for the feedback guys. And I loved all the quotes. I also prefer the smaller ring gauge cigars and after reading so many threads on this forum its seems that short and fat is the direction Cuba is going, which sucks.
OZCUBAN Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 He said that just before the battle of Waterloo Or was that the Stoke City manager
Smallclub Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 Anyway, you will realize that as soon as a cigar is discontinued, it becomes the favorite of people who never spoke about it and never bought it when it was available…
gigabyte056 Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 Anyway, you will realize that as soon as a cigar is discontinued, it becomes the favorite of people who never spoke about it and never bought it when it was available… A cigar is much more than the sum of the tastes as we are well aware, for instance in recent years I haven't been buying Dip 4 since I wanted to diversify and extend my knowledge of different tastes and sizes, however when I heard that it is discontinued I felt the urge to stock up. We are all hoarders of a sort, it seems only logical that we hoard on cigars that accompanied us along the road to where we are now.
bassman Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 I have confined my hoarding to 2002 Partagas Lonsdales & now have 4 cabs of them. One of my favorite smokes. Just finished one today.
jedipastor Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 Someone on another board just said that when they were in Cuba last month they heard a couple of the HdM lines might get cut, specifically the smaller rings. JUST a rumor, so don't freak out or anything yet. I hope it's false, as I'm starting to get into HdM.
