Freddy Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Apologies for this possibly noob question: I never smoke more than one cigar a day, and usually skip 2 or 3 days. So, on the average I smoke 4 or 5 cigars a week. Lately, I noticed that after I smoke a cigar I feel a burning sensation on my tongue. Not pleasant Is this anything to be worried about? Should I give up cigars? I hope not Any ideas, suggestions, comments? Thanks for your attention
gfoster Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Take the cigar out of your mouth and turn it around. You're sucking on the wrong end... -- Gary F.
Buch0 Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Hmmm I myself have never encountered such a feeling and I smoke as much as yourself. Will be interesting indeed to see what other members have to say about this..
LeafLover Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Are you smoking fast? Because the smoke can become hot if you smoke too fast. Is your cigar dry? A lot rh will dry out your cigars and a hot, unpleasant smoke will result. Does the burning sensation only occur when you smoke a cigar?

Avoid holding the cigar for long periods in your mouth. Everyone is different and cigars affect everyone in different ways. I smoke a hell of a lot of cigars but i have not experienced this. Get it checked and rule out anything untoward.
jacksfull Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 El Presidente said: ...2. Avoid holding the cigar for long periods in your mouth... That was my first thought. I sometimes get a bit of a stinging sensation from the nicotine if the cigar gets too wet in my mouth (not necessarily entirely unpleasant, though). At least, I assume it to be the nicotine since I've gotten the same sensation with nicotine gum... that and hiccups when I get an overload of the stuff.

Get it checked and rule out anything untoward. Thanks for your good advice, El Pres. I don't hold the cigar in my mouth for long periods of time. I really think it's because I puff too intensely and too often. I hesitate to have it checked out, because you know as well as I do, that whether or not the doctor finds anything, he'll tell me to "stop that filthy habit." Result: I'll be miserable and Czar will lose a customer
El Presidente Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Freddy, lay off the cigars for 7 days. If it is nothing sinister (more than likely) all will return to normal. Get a referral for a speach free doctor in your area
LiLo Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 I would say its because you might puff to often or too hard. I have never experienced this with cigars but i have with a pipe. a few years back when i first started to smoke a pipe i would burn my tongue from puffing too hard. In the pipe world they call it " tongue bite " It sounds like you have had something similar happen but with a cigar. Try smoking a little slower and puff a little more lightly and i'm sure that would help.

Everytime I go for a check up, both doctor and nurse ask me if I smoke and when I tell them I smoke the occasional cigar I'm always told...."make sure it's a good one". they've never told me to stop or that it's a bad habit. Err on the side of caution and get it checked out.

gfoster Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 I just had my yearly checkup and the doc didn't bat an eye when I told him I smoked the occasional cigar. -- Gary F.

Kangaroo495 Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 My docs don't see the difference between cigars and cigarettes (like most people in this country). For them, cigars are worse, because you're inhaling much more smoke...
samb Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 My doc scared the **** outta me by saying he heard the beginnings of something very bad in my lungs... I quit smoking cigarettes shortly there after. Havent been back lately, but I think hed prolly recommend dropping cigars too. I dont think i will though . My tongue will burn if I smoke too fast. I can drag a petite corona out to just a little over an hour if I really relax with the puffing and smoke it to the nub. As long as a take slow deep drags on it my tongue and mouth wont bother me at all.
Kangaroo495 Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Mate, by the way, I used to be a big puffer too. Would get a burnt mouth and feel like throwing up after a Robusto! Then I kinda adjusted my smoking to take small puffs. So now I'm taking about 4 small (I mean really small!) puffs about every 30 secs. And I push a bit of smoke through the nose too. After I made the adjustment, my cigar smoking enjoyment increased tenfold.
joeypots Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 You might mention it to your dentist or dental hygienist the next time you go for a check up. They may be more aware of oral issues than a GP.
Smooth Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 I had sessions with some of the brightest and best specialist doctors this country has to offer and not one said anything detrimental about my smoking cigars. If it hurts, you're doing it wrong. Like the classic break-up line goes (with a twist): "Its not the cigars, its you." Change your smoking style and enjoy your smokes. PS: Someone said 4 small puffs every 30 secs? My word, Id take one per 30 secs to 1 minute, absolute max!
stargazer14 Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 It's nothing a shot of penicillin wont fix. And better take yer girl along with ya.
Freddy Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 FOLLOW-UP REPORT: I tried puffing at longer intervals, and, more important, I avoided smoking the cigar to a nub. I stopped puffing about a half inch before the ash approached the band. Happy to report that my tongue is OK 1

Rule out anything bad.
