El Rey del Mundo Aniversario ER Asia Pacifico 2012

Geniales - 54x150

I felt like something from the Humi-door today and a great BOTL sent me one of these so I could rotate the one from my display and revisit it.

I was very impressed with the first one I smoked from a sampler I bought in the spring of last year, and I've been anxious to see if it would remain as high on my list to acquire.

This beautiful cigar is hefty, with a satin Colorado wrapper having light veins, and is well packed.

The band is the classic ERDM, but with better embossing, near perfect print alignment, and a second regional band for the Asia Pacifico area.

The aroma at cold is a delicious combination of cinnamon, hay, and Spanish cedar, and is very nice and sweet.

Opening into the first third, I get an immediate honeysuckle with slight bitters like a radish without the pepper spice. Cedar and unsweetened graham are also present.

The initial retrohale is smooth and airy with a feint rose water or eucalyptus note.

It has a nice finish of medium duration, and it's burning with a wavy line and clean light grey ash.

A mild and smooth profile with decent smoke production.

Hints of lemon and tannins towards the end of the third and citrus is starting to show on the retrohale.

I roll the ash off with a snap at the end of the first third.

Into the second third, I am rewarded with improved richness and smoke volume once ashed and it is still smoking mild leaning toward medium.

Hello cinnamon! Floral and graham move to cinnamon and light coffee while the floral notes remain in the retrohale.

Roasted seed and grain notes, like toasted unbuttered mountain grain bread start to surface as the tannins increase giving a dry mouthfeel. A touch up is required near the half.

The finish develops increasing bitterness making me drink more soda water.

I rolled off the ash again entering the final third, as it seems to stifle smoke production on this cigar, and I am greeted with a mild nicotine hit. The toast flavor is tasting slightly burnt, and with the citrus notes, it is reminding me of burnt toast with marmalade without the sweetness.

The retrohale is getting more forceful and the finish has an accumulating affect. The tannins have eased while the coffee, cedar, cinnamon and graham return. Mild floral and citrus remain in the background.

Toward the end, things seem to be balancing out with toasted graham, cinnamon, coffee, and cedar with floral citrus follow up.

Thicker smoke and increased strength nearing the nub and there's some real wasabi nasal feel telling me I should blow a couple smoke rings before trying that again.

My final impression is this is a great cigar that will please any fan of the marca.

It does still need age, and I think they have the legs to become a special vintage treat to those with the patience to put them down for a long sleep.

Very nice review and photos as always Ryan. I find it fascinating that you guys who write these intensive reviews can keep concentrating and write coherently on first third, second third, whatever. By the second quarter I just slip into this smoking "trance" that cannot be distracted by such mortal details as " notes of hay and cognac infused blue cheese".

Great pics as always Rye. I hope these improve with a decent period of hibernation to be honest. I smoked an ERDM Balthasar (Baltic RE '09) during the week and it was off the hook. The Anniversario to me have a much milder/subtler profile than the Balthasar, but I hope they improve with age along the the same lines since I have invested in a few. Right now they are in the "revisit in 12 months" zone.

Great review and pics... this has been one of my favorite RE's. The last third usually gets bitter for me, probably because I like the first two thirds so much I can't slow down! Lol. Can't wait to see how these age...
