El Presidente
Just a quick update on some cigar questions I was given before I left. San Cristobal O'Reilly Book. Cigars have been rolled but production of the book/case has been delayed. Won't see it until next year. I tried one of the O'Reilly cigars and was impressed albeit I fight with the Double Robusto size. Behike Line. The new "Medio Tiempo" leaf being used exclusively for this line has produced from all reports the richest full bodied cigar being made in Cuba today. Unless I misunderstood, "Medio Tiempo" has not been used since the early years of the revolution. Pricing is extravagant as it will be 30% or more than say a Siglo Six. The boxes are a work of art but I did remind them that none of us smoke boxes. To be released at the Festival Dinner in February. Tobacco Strains. Six currently being used. The notes are in my missing suitcase Jars Delayed until 2010. Partagas Factory Relocation for Partagas factory refurbishment All is ready. No movement at the station. Dinero is short. Jose Marti Airport Now has an enclosed smoking room (or maybe I never noticed it before). No one using it !LOL!

compitaveggie
Is the smoke room the one by the check in counters? If it is it is pathetic and nobody was using it when I was there either. Jose

Ken Gargett
Thanks for sharing Robert! As long as they are not canceling the Lanceros that is good news for the Cohiba line! piggy, that is one famous cigar. i really can't imagine they'd ever can it completely. but who knows... as for the smoking room, think it has always been there but no one takes any notice. i usually go to the largely deserted upstairs area but plenty of vacant chairs. take a book and a hamlet and smoke away. they are kind enough to put ashtrays next to the no smoking signs. El Presidente
Prez, I am interested in your notes concerning the re-insurgence of the Pelo de Oro strain. I asked that question Chuck but no one appears to be aware of it from the people I know but then again they are on the trade side although they take pride in knowing what strains are currently being grown for commercial production. If it is being grown then it would be in select test lots on certain finca's only and under the guarded eye of TABACUBA.
paesano
And now we are up to date. Thanks for the thread

It has been suggested that it was used in the Cohiba 1492, which is one of the reasons why those cigars are so "unigue" compared to other production. Certainly possible chuck but you could also attain the same result by using Medio Tiempo leaf (very very strong/rich). The vegueros use to put a leaf of Medio Tiempo into their house rolls for that real kick.
demiurgic
Rob, All this talk about good tobacco seeds is getting me all wound up since I am trying to acquire some good seeds to from the Vinales region and have them shipped to Hawaii. I can only say that I adore the Cuban people I got in touch with for this purpose. Two of them now, with almost no english skills, and hearts the size of Cuba itself, are genuinely trying to get these seeds shipped over to me. However, I am aware it will take a miracle for those seeds to make it here. Tell me Rob, are regular production cigar tobacco plant seeds hard to find in Cuba itself? Sure. someone must be guarding the Medio tempo, or Habana 2000 plant seeds at some farm warehouse, for example, but I've seem tobacco seeds, lots of them infact. It's magnificent how fertile that plant is and the millions of seeds a few plants can produce~! Surely a few of these precious seeds from a good strain may find their way into your bag the next time you are back from Havana Rob? Maybe? Small chance? If it happened, I'll make you a deal you cannot refuse, ranging from class A Kona coffee or Raw Lehua Honey. Just tell me what thing Hawaiian you fancy mate. (No, I cannot ship hula girls ) I may even promise to send you a few stogies I will roll from the tobacco of the seeds itself. Yes only cigars that are smokable with average draw. Certainly no crap for that great El Presidente Magnifico of Brissy, a true pioneer...and....(fill in the blank with whatever stokes your ego)

The vegueros use to put a leaf of Medio Tiempo into their house rolls for that real kick. It is my understanding that Medio Tiempo is actually the very top leaf of a tobacco plant, thus not a strain. It would make perfect sence that the Medio Tiempo leaf would be strong as it is at the top of the plant and closer to the sun, thus stronger oils, taste and flavor. My understanding is that it is not a leaf used due to its strength. Jose did a tasting of the new Behike(Friday tastings) which uses Medio Tiempo and was in love with the richness but had to put it down for the last third as he could not finish it due to its intensity. SethG
Hmmm... it would appear I was very wrong, for some reason I thought Media Tiempo was a grade or strain of tobacco leaf. I see now that it's an additional section as in volado, seco, ligero, media tiempo? Just 4 leaves or am I missing something?
