Ok mateys time for a bit of fun I think. It's always interesting to know what other guys are smoking, and why, but it often gets confused by factors such as availability, what you can afford, how much time you have to puff away etc. We all know Cohiba and Monte are the two heavyweights, but I thought it would be interesting to run this little experiment.

So here you are, sitting on your ownsome on your island. The monkeys have kindly fashioned you a golf course, there's fishing aplenty, and once a fortnight you and your monkey mates get together for a bbq. :rotfl: In fact, these monkeys are so ingenious they've also managed to provide you with broadband internet access so you can reach the civilised world and of course, the Czar :rotfl:

Now, the kind folk at said online cigar emporium are willing to donate $4 a day / $28 a week (US) for habano research, providing you stick with one brand. So, with ample time and appropriate opportunities to light up, to which house do you cast your allegiance?

Feed your nicotine addiction with 10 Jose L. Piedras a week?

Take the middle road with a Bolivar every other day?

Go big with a Trini Robusto Extra once a week?

Or lose the plot and wheel in 1 Dunhill Estupendo a year or whatever it is....

The catch being of course that you can enjoy only one brand. 1-2 Cohibas a week or 4-5 Ramon Allones? For the sake of simplicity, let's keep it Cuban. There's a limit on poll options, so I left out Cuaba, Fonseca, Quai D'Orsay and Quintero guessing they'd score low. Just post if you'd choose one of them.

I'll go first. My most common smokes are Bolivar and H. Upmann. They have decent ranges, are solidly in the high 80 scores for me, and middleish of the road price. However, I think I'd take the plunge with Vegas Robaina. Limited variety, but spot on flavour profile for me, 9/10 construction and decently priced means I can have 2-3 a week.

My prediction for top brand, however......Partagas.

remember it's not just your one favourite stick - it's the brand as a whole you get to play with...

Punch.

Punch. :rotfl:

for me Punch falls down the rankings because - and I think I've just been unlucky - I have about a 50% success rate with burn and construction. The ones that are good are up there though, had a lovely Punch Punch this week.

Nice poll! Had to go with my Partagas.

aye, Partagas comes in with some heavy hitters - the P2, SD4, Lusitania...plus the whole Connossieur series....

what a cunning little poll

A rotation of different Monties.

1. They taste great.

2. The range is big (always something new)

3. The always keep you guessing. Would definitely never be bored on the island. If I got a bad one, I'd be analyzing, looking forward to the next one, thinking about it all day. That'll keep me occupied.

Why Partagas, incidentally? The D4 and P2 are such disappointment. Shorts are great, Lusis are on fire... but...

My money is on Bolivar winning this.

Monte should be a favourite for a place at least I suppose - I'm not sure but is it the biggest range?

Partagas, any Partagas but especially the D4 and P2....when on are magnificent. Consistency is my biggest issue with that brand.

I could easily take either Bolivar, Partagas, Ramon Allones and Upmann.

I'm going to go Partagas because their range is so huge, reliable and interesting.

Difficult choice, one and one only. Have to go for a marca with more variety then really... if not for that restriction then I could have gone for Ramon Allones or Vegas Robaina, but as it is, I have settled for Bolivar... not the largest range, but has several of my most satisfying cigars

Cohiba would be good, but as you say, too expensive, you'd only get a few cigars a month! If you're living in paradise you're gonna wanna smoke more than that...

Interesting so far...

I would have thought, by the way, that Trinidad would have been in the mix but obviously not. The Reyes, Robusto T, Robusto Extra, Fundadores....all great cigars. Trini was my dark horse outside bet.

The $4 a day would cruel me. I would need 2 cigars a day and the only way i can achieve that is to go Por Larranaga Montecarlo and Panatela. I like the flavour and the price is right.

I took some deliberating over what a good control price would be, but even at $5 a day it skews too much towards the premium brands - $35 a week can get you some decent smoking. Any less of course and you'd be on the Guantanameras.

Bunburyist...great topic...I like this thread.

I deliberated a bit on this, but ended up going with Partagas for the breadth of choices and the price. Considered Boli, but I enjoy the flavor profile of the Partagas more. The reason it was tough is that like Kanga...I love my Montes, but on $4 a day and the Monte price point...it makes it tough to select them. In paradise...you want to be able to smoke more often, right?

Thanks for the thread.

I chose Bolivar over Upmann by tossing a coin in my head. I like them about equally, with Partagas a close second.

I like Rob's thinking with the affordable PLs, but I'd rather smoke two or three really good cigars a week.

Again, if it were to be just one brand and one vitola,

then for me , it would have to be HDM Epicure No. 1,

I would not mind smoking only that on an Island :rotfl::rotfl:

Just one brand, but any vitola within that brand. It's not too hard to think of your favourite cigar, or at least your top three - but to stick with just one house I think is quite tricky.

So far the stand out feature of the poll is that a major brand, Romeo y Julieta doesn't have a single vote. It has the variety, plus the heritage and some decent cigars (Churchill, Short Churchill, Cazadores etc), isn't the most expensive yet doesn't seem to be anyone's no. 1. Interesting.
