archosaur Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 This is the best time of year. The history, the rivalries, the tradition and pageantry of US college football make it one of the greatest sports on Earth.
KB24 Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 Being from Southern California I got to go with our "Pro" team USC. I follow the Irish because of my relationship with the QB Jimmy Clausen and the Clausen family! -Patrick
cpprhead59 Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 I am very new here and I am going to make this post and get out of the way to the people throwing cans at me. College football is much better than the NFL. The traditions, rivalries, etc make it a tremendous experiene. As for me, myself and my family live and die with Notre Dame. I am looking forward to seeing what is going to happen this year and how our coach will do. I think if he does not get 10 wins, he will be fired. Go Irish!
qman22 Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 I enjoy college football and basketball more than their pro counterparts. I think it's because I went to a D1 school and got wrapped up in the experience. Lets Goooooooo Mountaineers!
bunburyist Posted September 5, 2009 Author Posted September 5, 2009 Almost stopped reading at Bama . . . did at the one team in SE stuff . . . LOL at ohio state and florida being flash in the pan National Championships: Alabama - 16 Florida - 5 Or, properly recognised Championships: Alabama - 11 Ohio State - 5 And since I've been paying attention to this game, I watched three championship games and the two in which the Buckeyes 'starred' they got pasted. Bamas wins date back to the 20s. Florida's first was what, 96? In the grand scheme of things....flash in the pan amigos.
dulaney22 Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 1925 National Championship- Alabama claims they share this one with Dartmouth. Who awarded the NC? Houlgate and Helms. Houlgate started his system in 1927. So Bama won their 1925 NC using a formula that didn't exist until 1927? Helms Athletic Foundation started in 1941. Another incredible retroactive NC. The Associated Press Poll has been active since 1936. The AP took their final poll prior to bowl games from 1936 - 1964 and in 1966 and 1967. They took their final poll after the bowl games in 1965 and from 1968 - Current. 1926 National Championship- Alabama claims they share this one with 3 other teams with equal or better records! Once again it is the Helms Athletic Foundation in 1941 that awards it! 1930 National Championship- The Davis poll says that Bama tied Notre Dame for NC this year. This was the only one to award it to Bama. Notre Dame was named NC in 6 polls! Parke Davis is another retroactive system! He (an individual, not an organization) did his in 1933! 1934 National Championship- Alabama says they share this with two other teams. The awarders are Dunkel, Williamson, and Football Thesaurus. Dunkel was an individual who came up with his own system. Williamson was a geologist who came up with his own system. Football Thesaurus first appeared in 1946! 1941 National Championship- This is a complete joke. The AP ranked Alabama 20th in the nation with 14 teams with better records in the top 20. Once again it is the Football Thesaurus that retroactively awards it. Alabama finished 3rd in the SEC that year. Mississippi State won the SEC title..yet Bama claims a National title! 1961 National Championship- Finally a legitimate NC. . 1964 National Championship- While the AP did award the NC to Bama (10-1-0), Arkansas had the better record, 11-0. Alabama played Texas in their bowl and LOST. The AP final poll was before the bowl. 1965 National Championship- The AP gave this to Bama. That year there were three teams with better records than Bama. Bama 9-1-1, Michigan St 10-1-0, Arkansas 10-1-0, Nebraska 10-1-0. 1973 National Championship- AP puts Bama 4th after their bowl game loss. Bama claims a NC from the UPI poll that was taken before they met Notre Dame in the bowl game and lost. There were 3 teams with better records than Bama that year. The embarrassment of naming Alabama number one caused the UPI to name champions after bowl games. Yet Bammer has no shame in claiming it of course. 1978 National Championship- AP gives this to Alabama(11-1-0) even though USC (12-1-0) had the better record Guess who Alabama lost to that year? USC!!!!!!!!!. UPI gave the NC to USC. 1979 National Championship- Their second legitimate NC. Their first Unanimous NC. 1992 National Championship- Their third legitimate NC. Their second Unanimous NC.
MoeCizlak Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 Not a fan, but I will say this: don't kid yourself about the purity of college sports - they are big business (especially football),and fraught with skullduggery. I would amend this to say that the skullduggery (great term by the way) applies mainly, but not solely, to Division 1 sports. Many of the Division 2 and 3 programs are shining examples of the term student/athlete. Heck, a lot of them even take there own tests and attend classes. I've come to the point that I am so disgusted with the greed and grift running rampant through major college sports that I only root for my alma mater (Iowa State) and the service academies, Army, Navy and Air Force. Those are three great examples of what college football should be.
ilgatto Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 I love college football more than any other sport. It is good to see ND fans here as I am a big one. I went to the game Saturday and had a great Cohiba Sig 1 before the game and a very good Boli RC after. Go Irish!!!!!

Obviously I only know a little about the game you guys have grown up with but, what exactly are you refering to when you talk of skullduggery etc? From what I can see, most all colleges are regularly suspending or booting out players for relatively minor transgressions like get wasted and fighting or not turning up to classes, and they clearly aren't paid so I'm not sure where you'd begin to 'cheat' in college sports. I think a couple of Bama players recently got in trouble for going on a fishing trip paid for by a local businessman. If that's as bad as it gets, or if a school receivers a few extra trainers and footballs for free then so big deal. The only thing I can think of is that a good % of players probably leave with no academic quals whatsoever, but that doesn't bug me so much. Unless of course you're talking about systemic drugs, match fixing etc....?
Rogers72 Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 Great post Dulaney. I have shared it with all of my bama friends.

Some have received payments directly from boosters and others have benefited indirectly. Homes have been purchased for family members or at least rented at a ridiculously low amount, new cars have been purchased for both players and family members while some players get no-show jobs that pay handsomely. Game fixing hasn't been a big deal but has happened in the past, although sometimes you really wonder. Although not showing up for classes is not a huge deal, having other students do course work for you is and this is not something uncommon. This kids possess high level skills which bring in millions upon millions of dollars for their respective universities and the athletes are becoming more and more aware of their value. There are people who think they should be compensated for the money they bring to their university but I've always held the belief that their free education (in form of a full ride scholarship) is just that.
BEVOSREVENGE Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 Most people seem to have a 'second' team somewhere they root for without really being a fully-fledged fan. For reasons not entirely clear, a couple years back I took an interest in US College Football. The whole system of college sports in the US appeals to me (unpaid atheletes, the draft, etc), and if I lived there I think I'd be more likely to go watch a NCAA game than an NFL one. And this is despite the crazy system of not have a knockout comp / playoffs to decide the champions - never understood that.Partly based on the film Forrest Gump, and partly because I've always had a yearning to go to the South for a massive bbq, I decided to go with Alabama. I was always going to go for one of the more 'storied' teams as you call it, and to be honest there's only one team in the SE. Even though some have predicted them a flop this year, I still think they'll make a bowl and be challenging for the national title next season, especially if they can hold on to Jones. 3yrs of Saban recruiting will pay off sooner or later. So I suppose there should be a point to this thread, other than me talking up 'Bama, so I predict Texas to upset Florida in the title game. Thoughts? Roll tide You Sir are a smart man. As the national championship game is being played in the Rose Bowl this year, I expect Texas to continue its winning ways there. Also, given that Texas got hosed last year and what happened to OU this last weekend, Bob Stoops has to be thinking that karma is a ***** but us Longhorn fans know what goes around comes around.

I'm hoping to see texas in the Rose Bowl this year, too. And this time, the right team will win!!!! No more push over defense that will let a qb run all over them! FIGHT ON!!!!!!! GO SC!!!! i love this time of year...

But who exactly is buying the house or the car - the university I guess? I don't know, but compared to the cheating that goes on with most sports with betting syndicates and drug taking, a student athelete getting a free rolex doesn't really some that big a deal to me. It's against the ethos of the game I suppose but I'd imagine the NCAA clamps down on it as hard as it wants to... Also, I'm guessing that players can't go straight form high school to the NFL? Obviously that's an enormous step up, but in rugby a player will normally be a squad player for a while before breaking into a the 1st team, unless of course he's freakishly fast / strong (Jonah Lomu anyone?). Having that facility might divert the more money-oriented players away from colleges.
ndtoronto Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 Thoughts on week 1 Biggest win-- BYU Biggest loss -- Could be a few here- Illinois getting handed by Mizzou-- Virginia losing to William and Mary-- Best Game-- Navy/Ohio St, Miami/Florida St Your thoughts? Games to watch out for in week 2? Irish will roll pass Michigan this week
bunburyist Posted September 9, 2009 Author Posted September 9, 2009 Irish will roll pass Michigan this week not so sure about that - I'm backing Michigan on this one. ND has the better players (it would seem), but how Weis is still in a job at one of the top programs is beyond logic. RR to come good in this one

Half my family did their graduate studies there...and my cousin teaches engineering there, so I am partial.
bunburyist Posted September 13, 2009 Author Posted September 13, 2009 Looks like I got lucky with that call in the Mich-ND game. Weis to be out of a job at the end of the season. Meanwhile, 'Bama continued their unstoppable ride

Weis to be out of a job at the end of the season.Meanwhile, 'Bama continued their unstoppable ride Weis found away to lose another one. Amazing! The play calling on their last offensive possession was horrific. The offense played great but the defense barely showed up. UM played great, cheers to them. Sickening loss.
cpprhead59 Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 FIGHT ON!!! SC just reloads. Barkley is only going to get better.
habone Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 Tressel outcoached again! The guy can't win the big games... typical Ohio football. They covered the spread though. Ha!
