Just interested in the observations of members after a discussion I was having yesterday.

List 1-5 with 1 being the "Fullest in body"

Diplomatico no 2: Partagas P2: Montecristo No 2: Vega Robaina Unicos: Upmann Number 2

In terms of Strength, I would rate the following as "Fullest in Body":

1. Partagas Serie P No.2

2. Vegas Robaina Unicos

3. Montecristo No.2

4. H. Upmann No.2

5. Diplomaticos No.2

3) Monte #2

I am not familiar with the other two well enough, but if I had to guess - Unicos would land between Upmann and Monte. Diplomatico would be last.

I can answer this from the standpoint of a two year old cigar:

H. Upmann

Partagas

Diplomatico

Montecristo

Vegas Robaina

top three and last, i'd agree with tampa and have not smoked enough of the upmann to know where it fits.

The survey is unanswerable based on my experiences over the years. Do you mean all '08 cigars, or just cigars in general?

For example: My previous box of Unicos had the pungent nature of a spoon full of wasabi. I would put those on top. My last one, a newer vintage was nothing to speak of; I would put those on the bottom. There is simply not enough consistency in Cuban cigars to rate them this way! It would depend on the crop years that you are talking about at the very least to be fair.

I have smoked all but the P2. I would say in spirit of the question asked that they are on average about the same. Sorry!

This is a question that I would be inclined to ask you Rob knowing that as a part of your job you must stay on top of current stock. I simply have not smoked all the cigars in say '07 or '08 vintage to answer the question fairly.

You are spot on Piggy. It was what I was discussing yesterday here at Czar House. While the core flavour is still in each ( A Dip is a Dip and Monte a Monte) there is a variance in strength not just year to year but within a year. Overall these are the ratings we came up with.

If you run a line through the years then on average you would get

  1. U2
  2. VRU/M2/P2 Equal
  3. D2

06

  1. U2
  2. M2
  3. P2
  4. VRU
  5. D2

07

  1. M2
  2. P2
  3. VRU
  4. U2
  5. D2

08

  1. VRU
  2. U2
  3. P2
  4. D2
  5. M2

Rob it's interesting to see you feel the 08 Unicos are fullest in body, I haven't heard much on these in 08. Can you give us a review?

Thank God!!! -LOL

I wrote my post and looked at it. I reread it and stared at it for a while longer... I read it again and thought. "Ray, your friends over there are going to start to think you are a truculent *******er if you don't stop being so damned disagreeable!" I smiled and posted it. -LOL

Some friends and I have been doing a group review of 100 cigars. The results are not all in yet as we are smoking them over time but the truth is that the facts are not looking real promising for our friends' cigars when objectively rated for consistency.

These days I am a whole box smoker; meaning that I generally complete an opened box over a period of time short enough to remember many of the cigars. I don't want to open up a new wound but when cigars are smoked this way you begin to learn a lot about cigar myths verses reality.

Just to be a bit more dissagreeable I have a box of D-2 that are remarkably full. I would have to pull them out for the code but I want to say that they are '06's. I would not be inclined to put them on the bottom of any list. Just goes to show ya'. - ;)

Ray,

We haven't just now started thinking you were a truculent MF :lol3:

I look forward to the results of your 100 cigar group review. Nice work finding out consistency is a possible issue ;)

Only pulling your chain mate !LOL!

I am not a box smoker. I pick from what comes in this week and what comes in next week. Over the course of a year I may sample 25 RASS from 25 different boxes. I agree with you I have had some cracker full Dip 2's from each of the years 06/07/08. To my experience however it is not the norm during the course of a year over a dozen different boxes. Same goes for M2. There was a batch from 07 that would put hairs on your chest. Next batch straight Medium. Same factory, different months, same year.

Listen numb nuts... some people argue this point! Next... most people review cigars and rate them for flavor or overall performane. Two cigars both rated the same numerically can be substantially different comparatively. The idea was not to rate the enjoyability of the cigar but to compare the cigars to each other in a fashion different from the typical, "this one was good and so was that one," rating system.

1) Upmann 2: '03s and '08s are some of the strongest MF'ers I have.

2) Monte 2: most of the '06s and '08s I have are medium; some are strong.

3) Parti P2: I haven't smoked one since they came out that was more than medium-bodied.

4) Diplo 2: most have been medium-bodied.

5) VR Unicos: I've only smoked '04s, and they were on the light side of medium.

I will have to second Shrinks list. I also believe he warned me about the 08 U2 strength! They are indeed very strong and powerful! USE SEP 08 is my boxcode.

There are so many components of "strength" that it's virtually impossible to rate cigars on this category as if it were a continuum.

Forced to rank them on strength "through the nose" I would say:

1. Unicos

2. PSP2

3. Monte #2

4. H. Upmann #2

5. Diplo #2

Diplomatico no 2: Partagas P2: Montecristo No 2: Vega Robaina Unicos: Upmann Number 2

Unicos

PSP2

Upmann 2

Dip 2

Monte 2

From what I have tried over time. I would rate them

1) PSP2

2) HU2

3) VR unico

4) Monte2

5) Dip2
