smll2 Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 In the past several weeks I've been able to pick up the following for my new wineador (and me). I want to buy four to six more boxes/cabs and I should be done for a while. I want to diversify my collection...so I always look forward to my limited opportunities to smoke with myself...and guests. Here's what I've got: Cab of BBF 25 Cab of BBPC 50 Box of BRC 25 Punch Spec II's 25 Juan Lopez 2's 25 Cohiba Sig III 25 I had been smoking NC's for the past three years....medium to high end. I think I'm pretty much done with them. I can't imagine taking the time to smoke anything else but the forbidden leaf. Any thoughts on what I should add? Am I missing some must have staples? Thanks I
El Presidente Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 As a piece of advice (for what it's worth). You have enough to work out the flavour profiles you like and do not like. There is no such thing as "must haves". There is such a thing as "what I like" Take your time. If purchasing over the next few months purchase singles in groups of 3 to determine new frontiers. When ordering ask the vendor to select singles which are great representations of the cigars you have requested. If he says "no...they are fairly ordinary currently" then allow him or her to make some recomendations. You have plenty of time. One of the core enemies of regular newcomers to CC's is over enthusiasm in that 12 months down the track they are loaded with boxes many of which they do not like. No need for that
smll2 Posted March 18, 2009 Author Posted March 18, 2009 Excellent Advice...and I appreciate your insight. I think that after smoking the NC's for the past several years I was trying to make up for lost time.

If I did make a suggestion, it would be to try a few from the Partagas marque - any or all of the Serie du Connaisseur line, as well as the 898. A few Bolivar Coronas Gigantes wouldn't hurt, and while we're at it, perhaps a few Upmann Sir Winstons and Magnum 46. And then there's...........
sounddust Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Looks like you fancy Bolivar , so remember to try the Coronas Extra!
Guest rob Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Buy more singles or sampler packs and buy less full boxes until you work out what suits you.

Never pay any attention to Colt, even when he's right. Sir Winston and 898's...they don't come much better. Grab some Connie 2's while you're at it.
Dogwatch Dale Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Welcome to FOH! Sound advice above by all. Take your time sampling, then invest in what you really like.
jeromeroselli Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Pick up a box of Monte 2's! If you'd like, I can be your personal cigar shopper.
kilroy Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 There is no such thing as "must haves". There is such a thing as "what I like" ... Those... are LIES!! Everyone needs a separate, fully stocked humidor filled with nothing but Partagas!
sounddust Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Those... are LIES!! Everyone needs a separate, fully stocked humidor filled with nothing but Partagas! I second that. And by Partagas, I mean Bolivar.
kilroy Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 I second that. And by Partagas, I mean Bolivar. Yeah well... you make a good point. You should have a separate, oversized, completely stocked humidor filled with Partagas AND Bolivar.

No need for that This is sage advice and I would take it. My friend Rob left out one important detail! There is more to life than large ring cigars. In my world the Cuban cigar revolves around a 42 ring gauge sun! 42 ring cigars present balance and perfection. I would pick up a slew of singles like Rob suggested but include in those a nice selection of Petit Coronas. These are great sized cigars, worth more than their weight in tobacco. Don't get caught in the bigger is better trap! -Piggy

As a friend of Petit Coronas my reccomendations are Diplomaticos 4, Montecristo 4, Punch PC and Bolivar PC. I dont think you´ll regret it...
smll2 Posted March 19, 2009 Author Posted March 19, 2009 Thanks to all for your suggestions. They were properly noted and acted upon. Mr. President...I have done my part. Now I'm counting on you... Thanks
samb Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 smll2, you have come a very long way from this, lol. Thanks again for the smokes. Ive let them rest enough for now I think, and I've started to smoke some. The Parti Shorts are amazing.
Ken Gargett Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 smll2, can you give us an update? what have you discovered?
paesano Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 Welcome from Tennessee. Great advice from great people as usual. I know as a noob I got on another site and tried to keep up with the Jonse's and chased cigars for 18 months. Now I have many boxes that I hope will age into something. You have all the time in the world.
smll2 Posted November 24, 2009 Author Posted November 24, 2009 smll2, can you give us an update? what have you discovered? I've learned that in this business...finding a vendor you trust and respect is the single most important step you take. This is key. Cuban cigars as we know are fickle as all hell. Knowing where they come from is numero uno. I've got my vendor. While my vendor has excellent prices IMO I would not stray elsewhere....for a deal...it's just not worth the hassle or gamble. I love my CoRos...Sig V's.... PCC aged stock...PSD 4's from 2004 ...RASS...PSP stock....Party Shorts, Monte 2's BBF's...monte 4's I have the Cohiba Maduros...and I very much enjoy them. Mag 46, 48's and 50's are out of this world. My Esplenspensives....have under performed. Sir Winnies...so so..Sig III's have consistent draw problems. I've found I'm not a big fan of larger smokes.....Party Lusi's and Salomones, HDM Double Coronas...the big SLR's....they seem to be hit and miss...some very good...others blah. I have really enjoyed the Monte especials...cohiba lanceros...These will be my next box purchases re: PSP or HQ. I think the skinny guys might be easier to construct... I smoked a RACF last week.....they have improved slightly but still kick. Dip 5's and Connie 1's are great values. I have had a few VR's and I like. I don't consider myself an afficionado....still a novice....not a level to post reviews. I could ramble on and on.... I know I'm still a freshman. In 2010 I'll be a sophmore.....oh ya!!!

What have you smoked....and how are they smoking? I'm interested to hear your feedback...thoughts Tom
samb Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Sam,The party shorts were from the PSP program....excellent. What have you smoked....and how are they smoking? I'm interested to hear your feedback...thoughts Tom All I have smoked so far was the Party short. Let it rest for awhile and it has come around perfectly. Construction, burn, draw were spot on. It was a stout smoke for such a small package. You got a great deal on those PSPs. Planning on the Party Lusi for Turkey day.
