Taino Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 Cutters I use whatever, I have a pair of scissors that belonged to my grandfather, made of surgical steel, that still work fine, but normally I use my nails and teeth. To light I also use whatever, usually matches, but I have a windmill torch for when I'm fishing, I've had it for 8 years or so and still works fine.
Mel39 Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 » Seriously...I want to know. What are you using or have you used in terms of » cutters and lighters that have been bulletproof. What do you swear by? Palio and Blazer on my person all the time. At home, I too have a Chinese table torch with see through tank, that cost $12 in a China Town NY bazaar and has lit first time and every time. I also recently bought the Swiss Army Knife cutter, which is great for small ring sizes.
aavkk Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 Blazer and Palio. Interesting you mentioned fuel being important Mark. I had some cheap fuel in my blazer when i first got it and it was jamming it up apparently. I almost sent it back. I got some new fuel drained out the old and wow, never a glitch since. Alan

So far so good on my X Tend!
Hugomarink Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 » » I have an original Blazer Torch lighter from 1998 that still works » » perfectly. Great lighter IMO. I just retired my Davidoff guillotine cutter after 10 » or 11 years of flawless performance. I replaced it with a Palio that was given to » me but my preferred cutter is my Benchmade pocketknife. » » My "childlock-free" original Blazer PB-207 Microtorch is still going » strong after as many years. Nothing but Vector has ever gone into this » lighter. It's a real gem. » » Wilkey I have noticed that my Davidoff cutter is getting a little loose as well. I hadn't considered replacing it just yet as it still seems to work just fine, but it certainly could be in its twilight. Both the Davidoff cutter and Torch lighter I got as freebies when I was an editor for SMOKE Magazine so I'm hesitant to actually pay for these things (even though that was a decade ago). :-D
jadawin Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 My go to cutter is a Palio, best cutter i have ever used. For a lighter, i usually use a mini creme brulee torch
josie67 Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 Blazer torch and Zino Davidoff guillotine cutter. I have had both of those for 10+ years, and they have never failed me.
Tony Maduro Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 My Blazer lighter has NEVER let me down. Nor have my cheap plastic double-blade cutters, believe it or not.
winelover Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 I've refined a technique where I scrape my tooth on the cap and it seems to be fail safe. Not method of choice but better than a cheap cutter. Otherwise, my palio. My problem is if I take a good cutter and lighter outside of my house and alcohol is involved, I invariably lose one or both. So far lost an X-tend and a Palio. Now I cut my cigars before I go out unless I am not drinking much. Not replaced my lighter yet, so instead use cheap butane's.
Evo03 Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 Never had an issue with my Palio cutter. And $3 Ronson torches work pretty well.

Graham, I'm not trying to shill for another website, but Mike's Cigars in Florida (which sells NC cigars) has the X Tend lighters on sale from time to time and usually for less than $100 U.S. In fact, I think they are on sale right now. Not sure how they handle international orders.

SmokinAl Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 One of these on the keychain... http://www.kershawknives.com/productdetails.php?id=24 ...1 blade for trimming the cap. Both blades as scissors for figuardos. It works very well. Credo in the humidor. Just a little large to carry around: http://www.credo.fr/uk/coupe_cigare_credo_...o_cutter_uk.htm

We have a hard time here getting access to the magnificent range of product you have available in the US. I have found in the past that not all that is expensie is good....Colibri and Prometheus come to mind.
crasmith Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 » Zikar and a Blazer torch... Had a Blazer for ten years now and going stong. Xikar also is the top! :-)
Chicago Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 »Brass Zippo with the U.S. Presidential seal and a Zino Davidoff cutter, both 15 years old.;-)
Caesar Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Davidoff double guillotine. Its ludicrously expensive, but works perfectly. I have a rather lame Zippo Blu; kills my thumb half the time.
havanaclub7 Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 » »Brass Zippo with the U.S. Presidential seal and a Zino Davidoff cutter, » both 15 years old.;-) I'd love that Zippo! I'm involved in politics and I've been invited to a couple of White House Christmas parties in the last few years. Since then, I've been adding like crazy to my Presidential memorabilia collection. That Zippo would be awesome! Just curious if you get any kind of flavor from the Zippo fuel when you light a cigar?
Colt45 Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 » Just curious if you get any kind of flavor from the Zippo fuel when you light a cigar? Many feel it does impart the flavor to cigars, but I used a regular zippo for years, and really never noticed. The main reason I switched to a torch is that they are just much better outdoors than the zippo.

I have not noticed flavor from the lighter but a cedar match is probably my favorite if I have one lying around. Yes, I love that lighter. Have not been able to find another since I purchased this one. I tell people I got it from AF1!
