Popular Post BrightonCorgi Posted March 3 Popular Post Posted March 3 Halvah, one of my favorite desserts and has been since I was young. Pistachio and Chocolate are my two favorite flavors. Sesame based is the only way IMO. Who else is a fan? 3 2

Popular Post JDoughty Posted March 3 Popular Post Posted March 3 I can take it or leave it. My spouse used to love the stuff and discovered there was such a thing as sugar free halvah. Overindulgence occurred. Unfortunately sugar free halvah is made with sugar alcohols that have quite an impressive effect on the digestive system, the consequence being the entire woodwind section of the London Symphony Orchestra moving into your pants and tootling away at high volume for hours. It's also highly laxative. I don't think we've had any halvah in the house since then. 😆 7
JohnS Posted March 3 Posted March 3 In Greek food culture halvah is a very popular dessert option. I am familiar with it growing up. Yes, I quite like it. 4
ha_banos Posted March 3 Posted March 3 My wife is the fan. She also discovered the sugar free variants. I don't get it. And don't like it. I've tried a few variants. 2
NYGuido Posted March 4 Posted March 4 I live in one of the most heavily Greek neighborhoods in the US and see it everywhere. It’s super tasty. I equate it to the Greek version of torrone, which I also love. As an American of Italian (well, Sicilian) ancestry, I’ve gotta say the Greeks sure know how to eat. They even have that awesome dessert that sounds like “galactic burrito” (I know, I know, it’s galaktoboureko). Edited for clarity because I re-read it and, wow, that first attempt had some interesting sentence structure! 3
BrightonCorgi Posted March 4 Author Posted March 4 My mom used to describe Halvah as "dry ice cream". The Russian style of Halvah uses sunflower seeds instead of sesame. It gives a nice texture, but not as good a flavor. In Israel there is a chain called Halva Kingdom that offer several styles of Halvah in big round cakes where you buy a slice. Utterly amazing. I think they're from North Africa. 4
Popular Post Fuzz AI Posted March 6 Popular Post Posted March 6 Ah, halva. I miss this dessert from my childhood. Having grown up in a suburb that was full of Greeks, Italians and Lebanese, I was exposed to all the wonderful desserts of the region. Lots of the neighbourhood mothers and grandmothers would be giving out plates of desserts, and we'd reciprocate with Asian delicacies. The '80s were a wonderful time to be alive. 5
BrightonCorgi Posted March 6 Author Posted March 6 For those who enjoy or may not have ever had Halva, here is one that I quite like on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Achva-Pistachio-Sesame-Halva-16/dp/B0FLYQS24Y 3

potpest Posted March 9 Posted March 9 I discovered Halvah in a shop called sumsum in Amsterdam, they were giving out samples outside and I loved it, like nothing I'd had before. The shop had loads of flavours, and I ended up with a lot of it, was eating it for months after. It was beautiful stuff to eat, though I just realised how expensive the version I had bought was when I saw it in my local Asian supermarket at a fraction of the cost. Will pick some up, haven't had it in a while. 2

Dry ice cream wins. Absolutely delicious. You were right about the portion size also. Kind of crumbles on the edges if you go over that size. For me anyway. 1
Chibearsv Posted March 23 Posted March 23 One of my daughters would ask for halvah everytime I went to the deli for lox and bagels. Like fudge, it was too sweet for me, especially first thing in the morning. 1 1
El Hoze Posted April 20 Posted April 20 I saw this last night and ordered one. I’ll bet my wife will love it. 2
El Hoze Posted April 25 Posted April 25 I got mine yesterday. Delicious. Dry ice cream is a good way to characterize it. Imagine it would be great with several dessert wines that have that nuttier thing, I may pop a bottle of sauternes tonight. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth generally so when I crave a little something for dessert this will be a go-to. I also can imagine if this is the one you can get off Amazon, then the really, really good ones will make your eyes roll. 3

I've had this brand Halva in Israel a few times and it's on another level. Same with their Tahini. Your Hummus will be like you're there. I wonder if they ship to the states or if it's reasonable? Halva - Kingdom of Halva - Halva

El Hoze Posted May 6 Posted May 6 I agree, very satisfying. Even with a house full of people eating it that relatively small portion I bought lasted nearly a week.
