slee552 Posted January 8 Posted January 8 This may be a stupid question so apologies in advance. I’m thinking about picking up some Cohibas to age, but I’m confused by my own taste preference. I’ve liked Hoyo Epi 2 and QD50 although found them a little on the bland side. Loved Trinidad after trying Vigia and Esmeralda. Among Partagas, really disliked Legados EL2020, wasn’t a fan of P2, but did enjoy D4. Does that make any sense? I thought I preferred milder sticks until the Trinidad’s and the D4, and am now curious about Cohibas. Are there any Cohibas that I would get along with?
Popular Post JohnS Posted January 8 Popular Post Posted January 8 It's not a stupid question at all. In fact, it's quite understandable given the current prohibitive pricing of the Cohiba marca. Based on your preferences, and going off my experience with Cohiba, you'd probably be better off going for the III, IV, V or VI in the Siglo line. The I and II would need more time down for you, in my opinion. In the Classic line, you could look at the Esplendidos, Lanceros, Coronas Especiales or Robustos. Again, the Medio Siglo here might not suit you. I wish I could counsel you to try each vitola for yourself, but the reality these days is quite different. A great many of us experienced members here have been fortunate in this regard. 8

To my tastes, the CoRo has that extra pop that your preferred cigars have. It's not my preferred Cohiba but it sounds like a good fit for your tastes. Plus, you've got mostly Robustos on your preferred list so it seems like a natural fit. 6
Cigarsmoker81 Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Can’t go wrong with Siglo 6/Medio Siglo and Robusto. It depends on your budget really. 3
garbandz Posted January 8 Posted January 8 You can't judge a marca based on just a couple of cigars. To really get the picture you should try different boxes, different years if possible, and maybe buy some aged stock to see what the magic is, or isn't. I have tried all the brands, most of them in some depth, and I have figured out which I prefer. Upmann, Montecristo, Romeo, Partagas are my top brands, nice flavors and mostly consistent. Cohiba can be magical, too many dull cigars in my personal experience. 1
Popular Post Ford2112 Posted January 8 Popular Post Posted January 8 In my experience the magic can be found anywhere in any number of marques. You won't know what you like based on the experience of others. When I got back into this hobby I had preconceived notions of what I would like. How wrong I was! A Cohiba Siglo II can be as good as any cigar you can smoke. Or a Lancero. Or a Robusto. I had to try them all. And my favorites tend to change due to my whimsical nature and whats smoking good these days. Imo, Cohiba had better knock my socks off every time I light one up at the prices they are asking. It doesn't work that way. It depends on too many variables. I just enjoy the journey these days. I buy them to burn and age can or can't make a big difference depending on whatever. If that makes any sense. 6
Havanaaddict Posted January 9 Posted January 9 Cohiba is now one of my favorite marcas, but that is not how it has always been. I used to just not get the CORO as it just did not have the depth or flavor of the Siglo line. It took awhile for me to come to LOVE the CORO so much back when the price was approachable, I went from smoking 1 a week to 2 a week then 3 a week. Now it's maybe 1 a month in my rotation, I still love them but they are a different animal in the line. Another is the Siglo VI, it was one of my least favorite cigars in the line, but I have come to really enjoy the size and blend. So let's get down to the nitty gritty. If I had to give someone a Cohiba that best represented the line it would have to be the Coronas Especiales or the Lanceros. Both of them just have so much depth and develop the honey, hay, grass flavors in a short aging period. But the next would be the Siglo I, II, and III, but they seem to take a little longer the get to that sweet spot. There is really no cigar that can come close to them with lots of age 10+ year outstanding 20+ years magical 30+ euphoric! 2
99call Posted January 9 Posted January 9 I would buy 2 singles and make your buying decision on the back of the results 1 x QDO 52 2 x Cohiba Siglo VI P.S. I would classify Trinidad as a light-to-medium blend. It has a heavy rich body, but light in strength. It's sounds like you enjoy cigars with a heavy body, but not necessarily strong. 1

Just jumping in, I’m like the last statement, enjoy heavy body but not necessarily strong. I have Siglo1 from 2022 and some Siglo3 from 2019. I’ve tried the 1, but not the 3 yet. Not sure what to make of the 1 though since I’m still new.
BlueWS Posted February 13 Posted February 13 No mention of how old the cigars were that you smoked. Bland to me is almost every Cuban cigar under 1yr from box date. I've tried 30 under the year mark when I first started buying, because I needed a reference point. A 9 month old QD 50 was a cardboard windtunnel. A 6 month old Ep 2 was tasteless and boring to me. At 1+ years the QD50 was a much different cigar, the magic started to happen. A 2 year old QD 50 was nothing like the one I first tried. If your reference point is cigars with at least a year + of age and they're still bland, then you need to go stronger.

I was gifted a Legados last year and had great expectations, unfortunately it was one to forget. So much so that I had suspicions that it was a fake, which if it were true would be my first experience with a counterfeit. @JohnS has made a review here: Interesting how much HSA can charge for disappointments. 1
