Calling all rum drinkers...

Recommended Posts

I very much enjoy the sweeter alcohol climes with a cigar, particularly love a PX... so if it's just spirits on the table, it's gotta be a good rum... :cigar:

If you're of the same mind, a couple of questions:

1. What brand of rum is your regular go-to &/or perfect pairing (regardless of cost, etc)?

2. Do you find any particular cigars in your rotation go best with a rum... if so, what are they?

🤔

And just for some eye-candy to whet the appetite for discussion... :D

Legendario Elixir De Cuba is pretty good with cigars. Sweet and very delicious, one of my favourite.

On less sweet side I could recommend to try Ratu Dark 5YO Spiced Premium Rum, the taste is very interesting.

Personally, I think a molasses-based rum goes perfectly with most Cuban and New World cigars, even better than most bourbons and whiskeys (agricole rums perhaps not as much). There’s something about the sweetness that really complements the tobacco. My go-to lately has been Havana Club 7.

I am biased because I did my honeymoon in the Virgin Islands but Cruzan Single Barrel Dark 5 Year is an excellent choice. Cruzan makes its rum similarly to Cuba, giving it a clean flavor. In terms of cigars that go with them, I find something like a Bolivar PC or Fonseca Cosacos goes great. I would say I use my PL and Epicure No.2s (lighter cigars) for my coffee/morning smokes and the darker ones for when I'm having a spirit.

Was a big fan of Foursquare and Zacapa, but after listening to a lizard podcast where they drank/rated Flor de Cana 12 yr, decided to give it a try. Really enjoyed it , then gave the 18yr a shot and it’s even better.  No added sugar or other additives so no headache. Drinks absolutely splendid neat and pairs with cigars.

Big fan of Barbancourt 15 (Haiti). Very oak-driven and not overly sweet like a dosed rum.

Also Santiago de Cuba 11 of course (if you can find it).

For fancier stuff I like Ron Zapaca. I think all the premium stuff is good when it comes to rum. I like the Jamaican & Central American styles.  If using for a punch bowl or the like Old Monk is fine. Goslings for Dark & Stormy's.

Flor de Cana 12 is my go to, 18 if I'm feeling fancy.

Nicaraguan cigars and coffee or rum is all too easy of a pairing.

See if you can find Pusser's navy Rum: Gunpowder proof. It's the same recipe the Royal Navy used before black tot day, it's 64% ish and is pretty much like caramel raisin fudge in a bottle. Easily the best tasting rum I've had, (more so than the Zacapa stuff, as good as that is), decenrky prices to (£30 ish or equivalent)

If you like the Ron Zacapa Centenario 23, but with a bit more punch, try the Zacapa Edicion Negra.

The Centenario 23 is my go-to. Sadly this Negra edition doesn't seem available anywhere for me.

I am a big rum man. I just had a hand in selecting a 42 year Panama rum cask (65% ABV!!) that will be bottled by an independent bottler friend of mine in London next month. The value in rum is with the independent bottlers, some of my recent drinkers are- anything from Samaroli (not usually cask strength but pure class) as well as TDL bottling from Chrolton whisky.

Generally Panama and Cuban rum will pair better with cigars due to their softer, less funky nature, but if you’re looking for a burst of flavour I’d recommend Trinidad, a privately bottled four square or Jamaica (if you can handle it)

In the words of a good friend of mine in the cigar industry. "Rum is THE drink to have with cigars". (Although the FOH folks will have you believe orange juice is the one 😂

P.S- tried orange juice, you’ll be surprised, it makes no sense.

I mean rum and (fresh squeezed) orange juice is fantastic (like a rum old-fashioned) so...

Flor de Cana 18 (~$50 usd) is great for a basic rum. Anything Foursquare cask strength is very good for a neutral molasses rum if you want higher proof. My two all time favorite rums are the Trois Rivières 2006 13 year cask bottling and the Cadenhead Caroni 21 year from Trinidad. Big and funky, sort of like the Islay single malts of rum. For CC pairing it’s also hard to beat the classic Havana Club 15.
