Chibearsv Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 Post up any head scratchers that have stunned you (within the rules of course 😁). Chicago sues Kia, Hyundai over ‘car theft crisis’ I had to read that headline twice this morning in the paper. The City of Chicago is suing Korean car manufacturers because it's their fault that thieving punks are stealing cars. What the hell? If my patio furniture gets stolen, Should I sue the manufacturer for recommending I keep the furniture outdoors? The complaint alleges Kia and Hyundai failed to equip their U.S. cars with anti-theft technology after a surge in thefts sparked by videos on TikTok and YouTube showing how to steal cars without keys. By Tom Schuba Updated Aug 24, 2023, 6:42pm CDT A complaint filed by the city of Chicago against Kia and Hyundai alleges the automakers failed to equip cars sold in the U.S. with anti-theft technology that other carmakers have made standard. More than 8,000 Kias and Hyundais were stolen in Chicago last year, the mayor’s office said. Associated Press
BrightonCorgi Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 Anyone can file a lawsuit. One could argue that lack of a theft deterrent makes the car an attractive nuisance. They are in the wrong to entice thieves. I am sure there are few on here that would say Kia & Hyundai are at fault. 1 1
NSXCIGAR Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 I'm not a lawyer but I'm not sure about the city's standing on this. A class action suit involving the owners makes more sense to me. 2
Chibearsv Posted August 25, 2023 Author Posted August 25, 2023 How about a class action suit against the city for allowing the underage thieves to get away with grand theft. 2 1
BoliDan Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 Definitely would jump in on a class action. I have Hyundai 2011 and live in a major city. My lock was drilled through while I was sleeping. They must have used the car as cover because my camera did not catch them. Luckily they didn't have anything to cut through the steering column, so my club deterred them. The other day I was sitting in a Starbucks parking lot munching on my ham and cheese croissant, and a red KIA pulled up directly to my car. They then noticed I was in the car and drove away. 1

The merits of the suit are another matter. 1
cigcars Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 *I'm reasonably certain this case and these charges will get thrown out in a court of law.
