Capn_Jackson Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 Hermoso no. 4 2019 Nice sunny day, though the air is pretty warm and thick, not my favorite. I’m enjoying this cigar with sparkling water, and just a hint of lime that I always enjoy with my Habanos smokes. I’ve only had the opportunity to smoke this cigar a few times before, after a great BOTL introduced it to me early last year. The wrapper is a very smooth chocolate brown, with a slight shine, some minimal veins and barely any tooth. Nice little touch of box press. Coloration very even, not mottled at all. Cold draw is sweet coffee, with a hint of stone fruit and spice, and the foot smells like cedar and sweet tobacco. After a straight cut, this stick has an exceptional draw, and I’m hoping the 80% outside humidity doesn’t change that. After lighting, I taste strong hay, a little coffee, and a tangy zip of fruit at the end. Doesn’t take too long to open up, giving me some nice sweet smoke right at the beginning. First third: Hay, sweet coffee and cream, and some dark fruit dominate the first third. The finish comes across as a raisin or prune-like flavor, with occasional bites of strawberry mixed in for fun. Strength is mild to medium, and texture is creamy, almost syrupy. I habitually retrohale, about 1/3 of every puff. Without the retro, on this cigar I get a bit more oak and sweet hay on the palate. Very nice, but the retro brings much more of that distinct fruit and cream flavor. The draw on this smoke is fantastic. The smoke output is brilliant, and the aroma on my back porch is that of wood and coffee. The ash held on right up until the 2nd third, before dropping into my lap during a puff. Also, as I found out when I finished the smoke, a small piece of ash fell inside my house shoes. Fine then, be that way! Second third: Not much change in the 2nd third, although eventually some butter cream and a hint of almond make their presence known. The strength kicks up just a notch, but still nothing over medium. The finish and retro seem unchanged, other than that butter cream and bit of almond. Texture gets even more syrupy towards the middle, giving a nice envelope for that raisin/prune flavor. Overall the notes are darker near the middle, which I find very enjoyable. I had to do a little more touch up around the halfway point as well. Final third: Towards the end, the flavors get a little muddled. Still delicious, but the fruit has dwindled. The hay and sweet coffee remain, joined by a little bit of milk, some cocoa, and a strong note of oak. After those touch-ups in the middle, the burn line has remained almost constant toward the end. This cigar took just about an hour and a half, and was a very nice treat! The strength never wandered past medium and although it wasn’t very complex, it was still a delicious morning smoke. As many inconsistencies as Habanos can exhibit, I would say that this smoke was a very good example of this well-loved, regular production cigar. A mark against the construction, there was one particular spot that needed a touch-up several times, right on one corner of the press. Didn’t affect flavor or smoke at all, though. There was no bitterness or strong pepper throughout, and the end of the smoke never got overheated or “gamey.” I give this a 91. 2
