Cuba Hopes Russia Will Supply 32,000 Barrels of Oil Per Day

for each year

With this and the shipments from Venezuela, the Island would cover its fuel deficit, if it gets the 676 million dollars to pay for the Moscow crude.

If the USA could simply just renegotiate or well.... just end the embargo they have against Cuba, then they wouldn't have to be dealing with them buying stuff from Russia but instead keep the North American economy strong with another trade partner. Im a bit bias as a Canadian. But imagine a world where both the USA and Canada has free trade with Cuba. It would benefit all parties greatly.

The real headline in this article was buried in the last paragraph.

Cuba has sold off the last two shipments that arrived from Venezuela, supposedly because they don't have the room to store it. (I wonder who they sold it to?)

If they cant store the 59,000 barrels a day that Venezuela is sending, what are they going to do with another 30K + per day? Probably sell it. So the government and military can keep "investing" in hotels or just stuff the cash in their pockets.

Cuba isn't going to be buying anything. As the article states they'll be "relying on Russia's generosity" AKA stacking up more debt until Russia "forgives" it. The issue isn't free trade, Cuba gets more of its food from Canada and the USA than anywhere else. 10s of millions of dollars worth of Chicken from the US, every month, plenty of beans and other vegetables as well. Canada mainly sells wheat, and both countries do so freely, with no restrictions. Well, maybe one, neither country is dumb enough to trade with Cuba on credit, both insist on cash in hand before the boat leaves for Cuba. Because Cuba doesn't pay their debts, any of them, to anyone.

Ah, thank you for that.

So even if the embargo dropped tomorrow, Cuba is still in a world of hurt.

Does anyone know what happened to its oil production?   For many years up to 2015 it was producing 50k barrels a day.   Now they are down to 31k.

Correct. The embargo definitely makes it harder for the regime to maneuver, but its their own failings that are the real problem. Cuba shouldn't need anyone's help. They have more than enough natural resources and productive farmland for a population their size, but they just wont get out of their own way.

The same thing that's happened to all of their production. Tobacco, food, medicine, tourism. The Government and Military steal all the profits and refuse to reinvest a dime into anything that wont directly make them more money. They're like parasites, eventually, they will kill the host.

@Corylax18 reading many comments i respect your thoughts about life on the island one hell of a lot.  That said didn't they lose 2 or 3 storage terminals in a fire across the harbor from Havana?  Everything else I think you are spot on.

If Cuba is waiting for Russia to save its ass, I wish them the best.

✌️

They lost a large portion of the largest oil storage/processing facility on the island. The super tanker base outside Mantazas, about an hour and half east of Havana. This article stated they lost about 800,000 barrels worth of storage. I don't doubt that, but they have oil storage and refining facilities all over the island. I wasn't trying to refute the loss of capacity, but just asking the question; If they cant store/process what they're already getting from Venezuela, what is an extra 32,000 BPD of crude going to solve?

Adding to Cory's thoughts the government doesn't really care what happens to the locals. Shortages are just methods to control them. Power outages, scarcity of products are just methods to entertain and control the locals. Give them something to do, like stand in line all day for a chicken. Could be several days waiting for gas. That way when you get home you are broken down and tired. John

tired and hungry people tend to start a disturbance which leads to a revolution, what's there to lose? something the government can't control.

All the crude oil in the world means nothing if you can't properly REFINE it!!
