....we are going to need a bigger boat...

My great mate PJ took Tom and I out on his 16ft Kelly yesterday. He was showing us how to hunt mackeral (school and spotties) in the bay using different techniques. 

It was a gorgeous day. Hot as Hades....but gorgeous. 

 

 

 

We were really only 15 minutes from shore when we started trolling through PJ's fishing marks. We picked up a couple of school mackeral before things went quiet.  We then noticed some surface bust ups and headed across. Spotted mackeral were on the chew. Baitfish balls were everywhere. 

 

 

 

There was plenty of activity on the water but there was a particulalrly large school busting the water. It had some decent sized fish in it although I had no idea what they were. I assumed more  spotties. Sneak our way close, Tom fires .....he is on

 

 

20 minutes later and we had our first clear look at Toms fish as it was 10 feet from the boat.  Beautiful Long Tail tuna just over a metre long. 

It had plenty of fight in it but slowly being moved closer to the side of the boat.  I said to PJ that I would tail it in (grab the tail), PJ said that we would use the gaff as this fish was destined for sushimi. 

30 minute fight but Tom finally had the fish next to the mid point of the boat. 

Then the torpedo struck. 

2.5 metre bullshark struck the boat at full speed and took the tuna in a single lunge. It was a bronze blur. The impact alone had us losing our footing.  It went under the boat only to strike the motor. Bang. 

We were a little stunned. I am glad I didn't have my hands anywhere near that Tuna.  Great lesson

3 hours fishing......brilliant....and a few mackeral to take home.

The other day we had a blacktip shark up near the boat that was conservatively 5 feet or so (we were fishing for tarpon) and a bull shark came up and ate it almost up to the gills…we were on a 19 foot boat I am guessing the bull was a good 10 feet. Hope this video works (foul language warning)!

Those were some infested waters. I think I counted about six sharks at the end there when they started heading towards the bow. Were you able to catch anything?

We don’t fish for sharks, we actually try our best to avoid them as you don’t want a big old tarpon or snook to get eaten while hooked and sharks are a pain to yank in. Sometimes you have to leave an area because there are just too many sharks. That day we got a bunch of great fish to the boat. That video was taken about 1/2 mile off the beach near where I live, needless to say my wife may never let my four year old in the ocean after seeing videos like this.

Good looking fish! How do you prefer to cook them? Pan fried? Baked?

Haha. No, I didn't mean did you catch a shark, I mean were you able to catch anything with all those sharks around your boat going after the fish you caught.

We fillet them. Had mine for lunch today. 

Simply dusted with in a mix of flour and lemon pepper. Pan fried in butter and olive oil.

Simple. Magnificent 👍
