What is generally the max time Re-lighting a 1/4 or 1/2 smoked cigar that you had to put down, then re-lit successfully before it turned ugly?

It's always seemed to me you lose about 1cm of the cigar for every 10 mins the cigar is out. So at 30 mins, if you're at the halfway point, you won't have much cigar left.

On occasion, I’ve put a cigar down for more than an hour. To relight, just tap the remaining ash off, and relight by gently toasting (not torching) the foot - same as the original lighting process. After relighting, purge the cigar a few times.

Some cigars will recover to a reasonably enjoyable level, others won’t. Having said that, one shouldn’t expect the cigar to recover to the same level of flavour prior to going out. But at today’s prices... it’s worth a try.

Only one way to tell: that’s try it. I’ve left   a cigar outside overnight and lit it the next day with fine results. I’ve also relit a cigar after 20 mins and tossed it.

Someone gave me the advice and I've had success in letting a cigar rest for 20-30 min after lighting it if it was too humid/wet initially.

Not sure what the process is internally once lit, but I do think it dries out the cigar. This may or may not have an adverse effect if left for longer periods of time, depends on probably many factors and not just humidity.

As others have said, I find this answer highly variable. My baseline answer would be about 30 minutes, but that's dependent on lots of factors. I've never had good luck with re lighting a cigar past about an hour, maybe an hour and a half. But my buddies father regularly leaves cigars over night (12-18hours) then relights and smokes the rest the next day. He admits his palate is fried though, so I have a feeling they all taste the same to him before/after.

I’ve never had much luck with it even if it was just a few minutes unless like Pres says you’re too far in the bag for it to matter

10 mins for me, even after cutting off the burnt end. Always tastes nasty and ashy the times I’ve tried it.
