MoeFOH's Movie of the Week 🎥

Each week we're going to spotlight a movie... be it a classic, new release, hidden gem, or outright turd... and open it for discussion: i.e. post up your favourite quotes, clips, memories... or dive deeper and give us a critique on why you think it's great, overrated, or a complete train wreck... And finally score it for us... :looking:

All contributors go into a monthly prize draw for a 3-cigar sampler! :cigar:

PM me with suggestions if there's a movie you want to nominate for next week's discussion.

Week #17: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Moe says: for me, no contest as still the best movie of the entire series, regardless of which of the later films you wish to acknowledge or not acknowledge. :D

Over to you...

How do you rate it? Favourite scenes?

Best moments?... etc, and so on... post 'em up!!

If you've seen it, give us your score out of 10!

How do I rate this? Possibly one of the best sequels made and certainly one of, if not the best of all the Star Wars series films.

followed by Rogue One.

I agree. Rogue One is perhaps the most polished piece in the entire series. For me, it just lacks the character and nostalgia of the original trio.

The problem with Rogue One is the creepy looking Leia at the end.

Someone did a deepfake of Leia and it worked out better.

r/StarWars - Deepfake Improves CGI Leia from Rogue One

As for ESB, definitely one of the best, if not the best sequel ever made. I kind of remember my parents taking my brother and I to the Stanmore cinema to see it when it came out. Saw it again on VHS before I went to see ROTJ. As a kid, preferred ANH, but as I got older I started to appreciate ESB more.

My favorite Star Wars movie, for sure. I enjoyed Rogue One, but yeah, the CGI of Leia was very hokey.

fair argument to say this is the best of the entire series, except that the first one was so groundbreaking, it gets the gong. two amazing movies.

not sure how many they have made in the series, but fair to say that the entire reputation rests on these two movies. the rest are pretty average at best and very much derivative of these two. none of the others really can stand as a top movie. these two certainly can.

I’ve got to agree with Ken here. Though Empire might be a ‘better’ movie than A New Hope, when episode IV came out it was so groundbreaking. Just the opening shot of that Star Destroyer coming overhead and filling almost the entire screen for what seemed like minutes, got me hooked from when I first saw it.
Of course, Empire introduces some legendary characters such as Yoda, Boba Fett, Lando Calrissian etc. And Luke learns the truth about Vader.
It’s too hard to pick favorites really, as I’ve always seen the original trilogy as 1 big movie. I’m young enough that I started with the first 3 on VHS and could always watch them in succession. The prequel movies all seem more like separate movies in that regard, because I had to wait for the next one to be released, if that makes sense.

Anyway, Empire Strikes Back gets a 10/10 from me. As does anything original trilogy.

10/10 for me.  As to Ken's point, "A New Hope" is definitely more groundbreaking and important as the first SW film.  I've probably seen Ep IV over 100 times.  Empire is definitely a more solid movie overall.  I love the battle on Hoth scenes for it's gritty WWI trench warfare homage.  Introduction of Boba Fett didn't hurt either.

Honorable mention to Rogue One.  Fantastic prequel.  It should be labelled Ep 3.5.  Ep 1 - 3 are forgettable. I've never seen any of them more than once.  They are terrible movies with some cool scenes, that is all.

It's easy to agree that the first 2 are the only in the series that stand a chance at being the best in the series.  I hated the cliff hanger ending for Empire when I saw it the first time.  It felt like I was getting bamboozled at the time.  Since New Hope had an ending, I'd rate it a little higher.

Rating for Empire Stirkes Back 9.9 /10

All that being said, if you haven't seen The Mandalorian series, it's the best of all Star Wars in my opinion.

Empire was the superior of the first 3. Solid 10

My thoughts are much the same as all the others on here. Perhaps the greatest sequel ever made (Godfather Part II gives it a run). 10/10.   I still remember being SOOO excited as a kid in the 90's getting the three pack VHS of all three originals. Good times.

Ah, forgot about Kenobi, haven't seen it yet. As for shitting on canon, the Mouse wants what the Mouse wants. After throwing out most of the EU, all canon is now at risk.
