2021 AWARDS: PACKAGING TOP 10

The Packaging Awards is a tradition that pre-dates halfwheel itself. Brooks Whittington, co-founder of halfwheel, started the awards at his former blog, Smoking Stogie.

We ask each of our four writers to nominate items throughout the year, though there are no instructions given as to what should be considered. That means the list of nominations is a diverse mixture of items that look pretty, packaging formats that are innovative, and even sometimes, ones that are functional. Past finalists have ranged from cigar bundles covered in paper printed from a personal printer to gold decorated humidors.

This year, we modified the rules slightly by adding a requirement that at least one member of the halfwheel team must see the item in person in order for it to be considered. This was done so that we could get a better sense of the build quality of the items. In the end, 22 different products were nominated, each meeting the following qualifications:

  • Must be a new design for 2021.
  • Must be ship to stores for the first time in 2021.
  • A member of the halfwheel team must see the product in person.

Honestly, none of those nominees. Personally, I think even the Trini Robustos Extra Travel is nicer than any of those.

Ya seen one in person though? Considering this was on the phantom releases thread

Didn't you get some of these @El Presidente

I saw several vendors had them in stock the latter part of 21.

We had ours a little earlier back in April 21 from memory. I have seen none of recent times but apparently plenty coming out of the back door in Havana. I have heard that from various sources now.

The Cohiba Spectre packaging just highlights how badly a sexy package is needed for an NC "Cohiba" to sell.  The "McFly" design is gaudy and amateurish.  The Habanos and Davidoff offerings are great.  The Fuente one is gaudy but attractive nonetheless.  The #5 + 8 submissions are cool, but a bit too much in terms of graphics. The storage aspect with the drawers/coffins are cool.

The thing that got me about the Spectre packaging is that they went to all this trouble to design and manufacture a fancy metal case…and then shoved the cigars in a plastic tube.

General has no trouble selling its NC Cohiba. Especially over the last year. But a $100 NC Cohiba requires flash. And to be fair, so does a $100 Cuban Cohiba, hence all the holographic work of on the huge, blinged-out Behike bands. It obviously worked. Both sell out immediately.
