I would love to have that but for the price no thanks.

You say that,  and in one sense I get where you're coming from,  but the silver alone has got to be a decent chunk of that price,  and when you weight it up against the value people will place on those dogshit hotel nacional ashtrays carved with a blunt dremels,  it makes this thing look like an absolute bargain.

If I can figure out how these damned computer/Instagram thingies work, I am going to buy it! It’s like a little piece of home to me...

Yep, it's through necessity that we have to often accept the hefty daily rates of trade/professions of  plumbers, or accountants etc.  and it really frustrates me when people try to haggle with craftspeople,  you think Jesus,  this persons apprenticeship probably makes the average Architect look undercooked.  It's obvious when people are just hobbists, and I have no time for that, but when you meet a real craftsperson, I really enjoy paying them for their talent.  It's also likely that whatever you walk away with is a financial investment.

I remember reading a great account of Herbert Ponting (Captain Scotts Photographer) in his book "In Lotus Land" about his travels around Japan.   He said he was in a famous founder/silversmiths studio, surrounded by some individual pieces that had taken him years .   Anyway an American entered the studio and offered to buy everything he had, but was pointing to the items with his shoes, sometimes actually pushing them with his feet.    The artist rebuffed the sale and asked him to kindly leave.

I never said it wasn't worth that to others.  I personally would spend that money on more cigars.

Sorry I was in no way having a dig at you, it was that what you said, sparked a thought about a wider situation.

For what it's worth, Although I like the piece ( and think it's worth its worth the cash ) I also wouldn't be interested in buying it,  as my ashtray is a disgusting galvanised steel bucket that gets emptied every 4 months.   I'm simply too lazy to constantly empty an ashtray thats so small

All good I didn't take it that way.  Same with me,  my ashtrays are perpetually dirty and and left outside year round!

I thought this topic was about something else. The title made me think of RA Superiores with severe construction issues I had recently that was like a canoe one third in, all the way until I threw it away.

Nice, I'd love it, but guess the Sautter flip-flop silver ashtray is more of a deal at 45 quid ...

Not if you wear white socks with your flip flops/sandals, no smell, no taste - just eye cancer ... 🙂

Oh, that's me for sure!  Dark blue socks in the winter though.  I'm too old to care what they think and hate it if I can smell my own feet.
