Correos de Cuba delivers a package with stones instead of merchandise

The shipment arrived by plane from Spain to the Island, for which they blame Havana for the robbery

Juaquina Nieves Muiño does not know if it was Customs or the Post Office, but the package that he sent a month ago from Gran Canaria (Spain) to San Luis, in the province of Santiago de Cuba, arrived at its destination with stones and bricks and without part of the original charge.

"When my daughter picked it up at the San Luis post office, she opened it because she was not satisfied with how it arrived, and almost everything was stolen," she complains on Facebook. The Cuban regretted that so much effort to help the family has been useless and assures that the shipment arrived by plane from Spain to the island, for which she blames Havana for the robbery.

"I am not from publishing, but I see that it is blackmail. They have always stolen, but now throwing stones. They will not silence me until they give an explanation to me and to all of us who are harmed by it," said Nieves Muiño, whose daughter has filed a complaint with the Post Office after what happened.

"I am not from publishing, but I see that it is blackmail. They have always stolen, but now throwing stones. They will not shut me up until they give me an explanation"

Last week the Government approved a decree-law that includes "compensation for the loss, breakdown or theft of postal items" only "if the responsibility of the postal operators" is demonstrated "in fact." Postal shipments from abroad are, according to the norm, the responsibility of Correos "as soon as they enter the national territory for delivery or in transit at any of its postal centers."

The amounts provided for cases of damages in packages or merchandise originating abroad are 960 pesos, plus 540 pesos for each kilo, plus the fee charged.

Last December, Cubadebate defended the Cuban Post Office for being the object of a "media campaign that, organized and financed from the United States, is carried out against the Cuban government and its institutions."

The media argued that "accusations against Cuban Post office workers" appeared on social media for allegedly benefiting from their access to packages sent from abroad.

The company responded then that those complaints do not correspond "to reality, nor to what the vast majority of customers comment. To say that those of us who work at Correos de Cuba are thieves, criminals, profiteers, is totally unfair and uncertain."

The company placed 32 complaints received in 2020 for theft and change of content of some parcel shipments. "0.03% of the hundreds of tons with millions of parcel shipments that, in record figures, we have received, processed, transported and delivered," he claimed.

Another company that has also been the subject of several similar complaints is Aerovaradero, specialized in national and international air cargo and which belongs to the Cuban Civil Aviation Corporation.

Another company that has also been the subject of several similar complaints is Aerovaradero, specialized in national and international air cargo and which belongs to the Cuban Civil Aviation Corporation. Last December, several of its workers were arrested for an alleged crime of theft and misappropriation. According to the authorities, the incident emerged from the complaints of the passengers and the affected state companies. Among the items stolen were eight splits, televisions, computers, minibars, music equipment and sports shoes for high-performance athletes.

Both Correos de Cuba and Aerovaradero have also been highly criticized for delays of more than six months in the delivery of shipments from abroad. At the beginning of last March, Carlos Jesús Asencio Valerino, president of the Post Office, said that they were working 12 hours a day in the plant that processes the packages, which "allows handling between 14 and 16 tons" in a day.

To this scenario we must add the payment for service of 95 pesos, if the package is collected at a post office, or 100 if it is delivered to your home. The charge for customs services has also increased for postal shipments and Courier parcels. From 10 pesos that it cost before January 1, it has gone to 50 for each package that does not exceed 1.5 kilograms.

This is the case of Nieves Muiño's daughter, who had to pay "almost 3,000 pesos" for the six kilos arrived from the Canary Islands, part of them in stones, because her package exceeded the standard of one kilo and a half that Cuba requires for each package. that comes from abroad and in this case the rate is different.

They could care less until a state company (the state) was affected. Then it was off to the gulag.

As far as shipping things to Cuba, I know nothing about it but could have guaranteed it's a bad idea. Just send remittances. :shead:

You are right - I would have been surprised if there was a job or company in Cuba that didn't steal ... after all one takes jobs in Cuba according to how much one can steal at work.

I have been lucky to send packages to MIA and then a Cuban friend takes them to Havana for my friends, much needed personal care items and medicines, masks etc.
That plus phone top-ups.
Remittances are a double edged thing as the recipients get worthless Pesos while the needed items are sold in hard currency.

Well, Cuba Mail has recognized there were robberies of packages before ... won't be much help.

Correos de Cuba recognizes "more than ten thefts" of parcels and apologizes

Those affected "will be compensated in accordance with current legislation"

14ymedio, Havana | April 22, 2021

The Correos de Cuba business group, in an unusual gesture, acknowledged the theft of parcels suffered by clients of that state entity. In a statement published this Thursday he apologized to those affected and assured that "they will be compensated in accordance with current legislation" on the island.

The company's pronouncement occurred as a result of the fact that the complaint by Juaquina Nieves Muiño, who sent a package a month ago from Gran Canaria (Spain) to San Luis, in the province of Santiago de Cuba, went viral in independent media, but the The box arrived at its destination without part of its original cargo, which was replaced by stones and bricks.

"First of all, we offer sincere apologies to the clients of Correos de Cuba who have been affected by these isolated and exceptional events in our postal organization," the company said in the statement.

Correos de Cuba confirmed that in recent days "there have been more than ten events of this type in units of the Santiago de Cuba Post Office", something that they described as "very serious" while ensuring that they are "exceptional and today rare ".

The business group, wanting to reassure customers, stated that "this type of regrettable and isolated event will never go unpunished." The thefts are being investigated by the Ministry of the Interior, "in order to determine those responsible" and "the corresponding disciplinary, administrative and judicial measures will be applied with all rigor."

Last December Correos de Cuba said it was the object of a "media campaign" that, organized and financed from the United States, is being carried out against the Cuban government and its institutions.

After appearing on social networks "accusations against the workers" for allegedly benefiting from their access to the parcel sent from abroad, the company responded then that those complaints did not correspond "to reality, nor to what the vast majority of customers.

The business group placed 32 complaints received in 2020 for theft and change of content of some parcel shipments. "0.03% of the hundreds of tons with millions of parcel shipments that, in record figures, we have received, processed, transported and delivered," he alleged at the time.

Not saying remittances are helping much. They're just the only way to help short of physically going to the island with goods or USD.

Reminds me of the Army days. Guys would be all excited their household goods, cars arrived. You'd see them the next day all pissed off and you hear of their  crates security seal broken, items missing, whole crate missing, cars damaged or parts missing. Luckily most of that stuff was insured by the Army  but taking the time off, filling out paperwork in triplicate, paperwork getting lost and the general hassle made one half crazy for a good six months to a year. We'd hear how the govt ran a sting, caught a ring involved and within a month the next incoming guy would have a bunch of stuff missing. Internationally shipping goods just seemed like a crap shot back then.

I've heard of some people using that site. Do they actually ship anything into Cuba or do their products originate there? With those delivery times it must already be on the island.

So far as I know, they ship containers and offer up what they have on hand when it arrives. Have to be quick though. Milk, cheese, oil, chicken, pork, etc. get snapped up pretty fast.

I once went through an outfit that took orders until they filled a container in Miami. Then you had the sailing, customs and distribution once on the island. That was a month or more from order to delivery.
