DeskSmkr Posted October 29, 2020 Posted October 29, 2020 Not I! Nice lot Any ideas on make and model of the black and gold lighter, top right? I like it Found a vintage rollagas a few days ago, looking forward to it
RDB Posted October 29, 2020 Posted October 29, 2020 I’d be ever so cautious about something like this. As always, buy the seller, and I haven’t looked at anything except this one thumbnail pic. But there are a ton of Dupont fakes out there. And why put a load of these up together when - if they are genuine and carefully advertised - they could raise a lot more if sold individually. It’s also an odd collection of modern and vintage looking. Want to know the story. Could be one person’s lifetime collection I suppose. But caveat emptor!

This is from a world class auction company; not Craigslist. 1
BrightonCorgi Posted October 29, 2020 Author Posted October 29, 2020 I am digging black lacquer table lighter in the top left corner. Had a silver plate one like that I sold over a decade ago.

DBNInc Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 The guy at skinner listed the lot under “clocks, watches and scientific instruments”, so I assume lighters are not their forte. 19 hours ago, BrightonCorgi said: I am digging black lacquer table lighter in the top left corner. Here’s another: https://www.ebay.com/itm/302986610741 There are at least two silver ones for sale on eBay right now also

PigFish Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 The laque de Chine lighters are not exactly inexpensive. That whole collection for 2K, not a bad deal if nicely preserved.

Girardian Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 I have 2 STD lighters I need to post. I've been selling on eBay since '99 with a perfect feedback rating as a seller, but never sold a lighter before. I was surprised to discover several years ago that the famous DuPont "ping" is specific to the L2 lighter line, not other lighters (so a missing ping does not mean a replica; also I'm told even the fake L2s ping). Wondering if DuPont authenticates? If not, if you had them service a lighter that would seem a reassuring substitute (as they would not service a fake). Anyone ever have a DuPont serviced?

The Gatsby will also ping. The fake ping is different from a real ping, there are videos on YouTube comparing them. Pretty easy to identify a fake, the serial numbers are a dead giveaway. Plus, the fill port dot, weight, etc.

A friend of mine use to run ST Dupont (now at Brioni). They don't authenticate as far as I know and virtually any lighter that is serviced is done by an indy; even if ST Dupont recommends the company. The fakes can ping just well. I have had 3-4 different ST Dupont's serviced. I like to learn how to do it myself. Cannot be very difficult.
Oscar300 Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 I have a few, they all ping differently. I have one that just sounds awful, but is a real L2. I have decided to service that one myself, I have the o-ring kit and im making the extraction tool. Apparently the lid comes off all together so when I re-build it the sound may sort the sound may come back. Theres plenty of info online. 2k was a good deal. 1
