El Presidente Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 Let's run this one past the FOH sleuths! What can you tell us 4
Popular Post JohnS Posted July 7, 2020 Popular Post Posted July 7, 2020 That absolutely looks like genuine Quintero pre-Revolution (i.e pre-1960/61) box. Quintero was around pre-revolution (established 1924) and yes, boxes were stamped in this era with a note such as 'claro' to indicate the general wrapper shade of the cigars. The Coronas Selectas, a Coronas-sized cigar with the same dimensions as a Montecristo No.3, was discontinued in the early-1990s. I can't vouchsafe for the cigars that would be in that box though. 3 3

Thank god for the CCW, No matter how many times I've checked stuff, I always have to go back and double check every time, It's the overlapping that I can never get. I would be lost without them. I wonder what the "7" meant? I had some 1920's stuff not so long ago, that had similar random single numbers and single letters on. didn't seem to correlate to anything 1
teamrandr Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 Somewhere between late 67 and late 72. I smoked a 70's Quintero panatela and it was very good. This box looks to be sealed. Hopefully it was stored well. 1

May need to call in @ATGroom on that one! ?
ATGroom Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 As others have said, stamp is late '67 to 72. Looks fairly worn, so I would say on the later side of this range. It was originally sold in Spain, as indicated by the Spanish tax seal. I have nothing to offer on the "7", unfortunately. I have seen all kinds of numbers, letters and various other codes stamped on the bottom of old boxes. Many old boxes have signatures on the bottom, which I think denotes a quality control inspection by the importer. The meanings of the codes, unfortunately, are mostly lost to history.... although not all. Some years ago Simon Chase was able to give me a year and month of import from a 1970s box based on a four digit pencil written number on the base and H&F's records. Just thinking about the "7" logically, it is too short to be any serious kind of batch number or import number, and I don't think anyone would be silly enough to put a 7/10 type grade on the box. Maybe it was inspected by inspector number 7? 1 1
Ken Gargett Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 i could tell you in less than a second whether it was genuine or fake. quite simply, no one on the planet is so stupid as to make fake quinteros. ergo...

The condition of the box is decent so i assume its probably been tucked away in some humidor or other sort of shelf for 50/60 years.
