This is piggybacking on @BoliDans thread about being asked in an interview which super powers you'd choose.

I've been asked some strange questions in job interviews. The one that stands out to me the most was 'If you were a tree, what kind would you be?'. My answer was Maple due to it's versatility, but I always find myself thinking about what other options and explanations would be.  But I guess that was a good answer because I got that job.

What's the strangest question you've been asked for an interview?

Posted

I was asked just a single question in one of my undergraduate admission interviews:

”Given that we have no direct experience of the external world, how can we be sure that it exists?”

I've never been asked any unusual questions.

I have asked prospective employees to revise and resubmit their resume, correcting for "grammar and/or embellishments".  Mostly to see how they react.  It helps to screen for folks that aren't going to work out well.  More often than not, I don't hear anything back.  So many of these so-called resumes are so poorly written I can't force myself to read them all the way through.  And the best employees I've had (and have retained) have no medical office experience (they come in with a Zen mind) and their resumes are very simple and straight-forward.  The best are former restaurant servers since they typically have good people skills.

Apparently I'm a savant of useless general knowledge. Off the hip in my head I went - probably around 12 or 13k I would think. Google says 11,948.

Logic fishing. I was asked how many tennis balls I could fit in a car. These are pretty common if there is coding in the job.

A dream of mine is to incorporate the following test into a job interview.  So far my company is just a 2 man job but I cant wait to be a sociopath and do this to prospective employees.

Assuming it's a lunch interview somewhere with street lights at crossings.  Go to cross a street.  If they press the walk signal more than once then it's an immediate end of interview.

I have many coworkers at my full time gig that hit the elevator button dozens of times.  I always see that as a red flag for everything else.

Were you just seeing if they could do order of magnitude estimations or are you in the petroleum industry?  Some other reason?

Uh oh.  I wont apply with you.  I assume someone who presses it more than once is willing to commit to QA/QC in ensuring that the traffic control box got the signal!

One lick.

  1. Attach tootsie pop to drill.
  2. Place tongue on tootsie pop.
  3. Turn on drill.
  4. Centre achieved.
  5. Go to ER for massive tongue trauma.
