Is that because the law that mandates that the presence of ashtrays in the bathroom would need to be abolished, thus requiring legislators to do work?  Or is there a secondary function the ashtray might serve?

Like, it's illegal to open an umbrella in the street in Alabama (because it might scare the horses).  Outdated obviously, but still technically a valid law.  And out lawmakers have plenty of other stuff to bicker about.

According to aviation regulations, all aircraft must have ashtrays in order to be allowed to fly. Airlines do not trust passengers and put an ashtray in the toilet in case someone still tries to smoke secretly.
Airlines are afraid that smokers, not caring about all the bans, if strongly impatient, can still smoke, and then panic and get rid of his cigarette, throwing it into the receiver for used paper.

Tis true, some stupid FAA regulation. We even have ashtrays in the Flight deck still.

I think they still smoke in a few wild west type countries, friends who fly on Middle East Airlines (MEA) tell me tis true, with the right crew ??

Still imminently useful. With the way the laws are changing across the world, maybe they can be repurposed as roach trays.

I have no use for those ashtrays since finding this handy smoke permit in an old book.

One of my friends gave up Smoking cigarettes after a long flight lit in the toilet, the alarm went off, then a quarrel with the flight attendant... now smokes only cigars when and where it convenient emoji106.png

my understanding is that most of these ashtrays are there but blocked off. and they make plenty of announcements about not smoking in the toilets. and your mate still had a fight with the hostie? did he think he had any grounds?

My buddy made a straight face and tried to prove it wasn't him Smoking in the toilet, when he came in, there already been smoked.

Recently, Russian airlines several times stopped flying and landed the plane at the nearest airport due to the fact that someone decided to smoke in the toilet. They now consider this smoke dangerous for the flight. Here I agree with the pilot, who believes that he is not obliged to check it was a fire or someone decided to smoke. The fine and compensation of the airline turns out to be very serious.
