Lower Rh for Cuban cigars - this was kinda fun.

Recommended Posts

I use a handful of 69% boveda packs in my desktop humidor and in my tupperdor and my digital hygrometers always read about 66%. Maybe it is because neither are air tight and leak or the slightly colder temps - whatever the case, my cigars burn far cleaner than during summer when the temps rise and the humidors register more like 68-71%. I think I’ll do lower RH packs when the temps warm up since I don’t always have my place at a level 70 degrees.

Might be worthwhile to get a boveda 75% calibration pack and make sure your hydrometer is correct. I always used the salt test but recently calibrated my hydrometer with a boveda pack and found it to have about a 5% error.

I found that after a month of being open and sealed the Boveda 75% cal pack was worthless. I bought two new Sensorpush units after my first and used the same pack to calibrate. They were showing 6% low. I put the previously calibrated Sensorpush in the bag and it was showing low too. Did the traditional salt method and the numbers were right on. I am not paying money for the Boveda again. It is crazy because they are guaranteed for 3 months after opening.

I didn't believe it either until my own experiences trying to smoke "wet" Cubans and trying dry boxing methods to remedy the issue. Over time I figured out storing Habanos at a lower rh is just more convenient. I'll still dry box a NC here and there but they smoke great for me right out of my cooler. Anyway I shoot for 65rh for CC and keep all my NC at 70rh with good results.

My tupperdor with 9-10 closed boxes 72-73f, 61-62rh with 62% boveda packs. They are 67 gram packs, the size of an index card. I leave 6 packs in.

Humidor 50 cigars 72-73f, 61-62rh with 65% boveda packs. They are 60 gram packs. I leave 2 packs in that.

Have no control over temps but living in South Florida my house stays at 72-74 f pretty much all year round.

i think if I lived back up north I would be using an electric coolador for a steady temperature. It’s got to be tough to keep a steady temp. Up north.

Great story! I actually made a experiment last week. Smoked 2 siglo II from the same box. One in 69% and one in 62%.. they have been there for 5 weeks and the difference was huge. The 62% one burned better, didn't get as hot and was much sweeter / creamier.
