Representing an era of whiskey that cannot be remade, this collection of bourbon and rye whiskey is the largest ever found distilled before prohibition to go up for auction. The collection was discovered in 2017 in California, hidden behind bookcases and a 10-bolt vault style door. Over 40 cases of whiskey from the collection go under the hammer this week, highlighted by ghosts like Green River Straight Whiskey from 1910, Hermitage Rye from 1908, and Bottled-In-Bond Old Crow distilled in 1912. The auction also includes ancient Cognacs, rare single malt whiskies, and one of the greatest collections of historic Maderia to ever go on sale at auction.

If anyone is planning to place a bid, you might want to read this article that I came across a couple of days ago first.

fakes for spirits and wines a real problem. but i think that the auction has gone through so might be a smidge late placing bids. also, these days the major auction houses are very careful re provenance etc. of course, that does not guarantee no fakes.

In the light of recent decade of wine fraud and the vicinity to Hollywood - the chance of this being part of the set from Boardwalk Empire is pretty high. Hell, might even be Steve Buscemi’s own late night cap bar ??

Wonder how much of that stuff is still drinkable.
All of it. The spirits at least.

About 15 years ago a friend of mine was working on a house and found a bottle of Canadian whiskey dated somewhere in 1920s. I told him to contact an auction house and get some money for it (we were in late teens back then).

I didn't get mad at him because he didn't make a single call. I didn't even get mad at him because he didn't invite me to drink it. But when I heard that he mixed it with coke........

Time like that in the bottle does stuff to spirits.  I have had plenty of 19th century cognac and the freshness is gone.  A 10 year old whiskey sitting in a bottle for decades is much different than whiskey that 30 years old and then bottled.  Cool novelty to have those bottles, but nothing I would chase after.

Think wine is easy to fake, Whiskey and spirits are much easier.  Almost too easy.
