unclepauly25 Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 Just wanted some advice on what cigars are full body these days, it seems that over the years blends change and I think my taste has evolved, sometimes I crave a stronger cigar that can stand up to a espresso or some bourbon. I just smoked a JL S#2, great everyday smoke, just looking for something with more kick, I prefer 46 to 50 ring gauge and 5 inch length. I live in the USA so it’s hard to get access to different singles to try, can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks guys for all the help ?
JohnS Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 In regards to marcas, I would think that Ramon Allones and Bolivar are the strongest. In the thread below from 2 years ago, the H.Upmann Magnum 46 and Romeo y Julieta Cazadores were also mentioned... 1
ponfed Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 Of course, I know that it's not in your preferred RG range, but the thinner cigars might be what you need. I found that the ERDM Demi tasse stands up to a strong espresso. It full bodied enough, but what I find is that it cuts through, not competes against the espresso. You don't have to go quite that small, but a Bolivar Petit Corona or even an RG might do the trick. Something to think about. Edit: Maybe consider the Partagas Presidente. I just love it and it's nice and robust... and I find recent examples to be very well constructed, which is always a concern with a figurado like that... Larger RG too.
canadianbeaver Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 I vote Trinidad Reyes or any other from this brand Romeo y Julieta Cazadores CB
Hookmaker Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 Out of curiosity, is there a general difference in FOH terminology between full bodied and strong?
jschrader510 Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 @Hookmaker I think when people say full bodied here they are talking about "flavor". I tend to think of "strong" as having more connotations with a nicotine kick, which many of us aren't really after. 3
earthson Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 Full bodied? Bolivars are typically a good bet, but if a young JL wasn't full enough, you just might need to start smoking RyJ PC or Cazadores young. The flavors are totally muted, but I've found these to be the strongest Havanas in the 10 years I've been smoking them. Generally, though I avoid bourbon with cigars as I haven't found Cuban tobacco and American whiskey to mix well at all. Anything should go well with a quality espresso
joshhooper7 Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 Bolivar Petit Coronas (5x42) are very, very full bodied in their first year. The robust leather and bakers chocolate is almost over powering in their youth and it definitely stands up well to a bourbon. I've found this cigar to even stand up to peat monsters like Ardbeg. If you like a Robusto, Bolivar Royal Corona is also full bodied, just not nearly to the point where the petit corona is. I definitely agree with earthson above, however, in that Cuban tobacco and American whiskys don't mix too well. Some of the gentler Scotch's like Glennmorangie pair really well with Cohiba and Montecristo, but if I'm going after a high proof bourbon I'm going to pair it with a Nicaraguan maduro so the spice from the spirit has something equally spicy so both can be tasted.
BrightonCorgi Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 A lot of the EL's are full bodied and strong. Especially Partagas EL's. 1
torsion Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 RASCC - my ULA 13 still packing a punch! For a small/short cigar it's full bodied for my palate. Can be a slightly harder to find cigar at times. 1
Kaptain Karl Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 Honestly, if you're looking for brute strength and body, CC's probably wont deliver. La Flor Dominicana, Padron, or some powerhouse Nicaraguan smokes with a maduro leaf would be a better bet. Smoked a El gueguense maduro last week that would fit the bill for what you've asked for. I find almost all CC's to be mild-medium strength, medium body with exceptionally full flavor, which is why I like them so much more than NC's. Some NC smokers I know who love full strength, full body NC's have a hard time making the jump to CC's because they want that nicotine and pepper kick.

DeskSmkr Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 My not so great opinion, since I rarely drink bourbon and don’t ever pair it with cigars, however you might like this cigar, it was full flavor and strong enough I put it down and let it go out three times because I was overwhelmed by nicotine, and it relatively fits your size requirements. Brand: Oliva Product line: Master Blends 3 Size: Double Robusto Also suggest Arturo Fuente Don Carlos Robusto (strong nicotine in last third) and Fuente Opus X young, in a size you like. Cohiba Robusto like the ones on 24:24 right now, if the occasion presents itself to try them, I’d like to hear your thoughts. From what I’ve read, they are fantastic and one of the great Robustos. I’ve heard they have a nicotine kick, maybe not as strong as the aforementioned though.

For me, while there of course can be overlap, I think of body as the weight of the smoke on the palate - a sense of density, a sense of thickness. Strength for me is more along the lines of how I feel it in the stomach or head, for lack of better way to put it. Condensed milk or real cream has more body when compared to regular or fat free milk. A cask strength whiskey has a real sense of strength. I think cigars heavy with seco can exhibit great body (and flavor) without being really strong. Off the top of my head, I think back to a few '05 Cohiba Robusto that were very dense in body, rich, but smooth, balanced, and not strong per se. This is just how I look at it personally. 1

Yes to the ELs, but I couldn't - in good conscience - recommend cigars that offer what is - to me - second-class quality. Also, if you do like boozahol with your cigars, might I recommend Haiti's excellent Barbancourt 8-yr rum? It's dry like Cuban rum (I don't like sweet rums like Diplomatico or Kirk&Sweeney) and complements many blends well, especially fuller-bodied blends like RyJ or the above-mentioned Partagas Presidentes.
ErikB72 Posted October 25, 2018 Posted October 25, 2018 I’d say the Partagas Aristocrat I’m smoking right now is 4/5
