My first ever box of Partagas 898 Unvarnished arrived today, what a pretty looking box - the container is lovely, the wood varnished and the cigars are exceptional. I tried one ROTT and I have to say I don wonder why I bother buying anything else...

Beautiful cigars and hopefully they will be even better in a few months time. It got me thinking - what best describes the partagas tang, to me its like the sweet and sour of the cigar world, its very distinguishable but I cannot quite describe it. How do you describe it?

I've yet to even see an unvarnished box. Do they make these unvarnished anymore?

I know exactly what you mean--Partagas can be difficult to describe. The aroma and taste of a Lusitania is heavenly for me. PD4 gives me a nice spiciness I also love. And the shorts are another animal as well. I haven't smoked a Partagas I've disliked as of yet.

Did you get the varnished or the Unvarnished? Varnished is current production and the Unvarnished was discontinued in 2002. If you got an Unvarnished box ?!

Sorry, long day - varnished box.... tis a nice looking box too :)

I smoked a 2013 PSD4 which I must admit found a bit bland, still pleasantish mind.

Good 898 should by like tannic wet bark, mixed with a sort of smoked sweet paprika

Fantastic to hear, as I have my second box on the way! What month/year is yours? I have an April 18 and a May 18.

What is the minimum time that the Partagas 898s should be aged to do it justice?

I just got a box tonight in the 24:24 and I have never had these.

I usually do not smoke a cigar without 3 years of age on it.

Do you recall the box code?

Thanks

Same here (LMB) My first box also and without doubt the box, the cigars, the whole thing, a work of art. I'm still sitting on the full 25, in part simply because I love its aesthetic value as the whole.

Varnished is a dalia. Unvarnished was a corona grande. Not the same cigar. Still has the soul, but not as intense as it used to be. Pre-2000 strains were just... different.

I’ve got a box of BLP NOV 08 varnished, which I’ve been very patient not to break into yet. 10 year anniversary this month... i suppose i should try one...

I had to crack one fresh, just so I could see how it develops with age! They truly are spectacular cigars...the presentation is second to none!

Indeed they are. Call me strange but they taste and remind me of LSD. God knows how or why.

They go for surprisingly cheap on some of the auction sites...like $450USD.

If i could find any that were boxed before 2000, that’d be quite a find. Not sure how inclined I’d be to buy 00-02 production though.

I perhaps should have done the same. I always, always used to smoke ROTT and then one day didn't for whatever reason, then just never picked it up again. Trouble is, the longer it takes me to crack a box, the harder it seems to get. It had crossed my mind to break The 898's on Xmas Day but in the last half hour discovered that I'm working it. Oh well, I've been lucky with it other years so it must be my turn to be fair.
