I'd say it is a fault, but as long as I know what the code is I don't mind.  I use to pencil in the box code if only the outer box had it (throw the outer box out when I start smoking that box), but now I don't really care.

In the distant past some highly trusted vendors would unband cigars and ship them in generic boxes they produced, so a typical practice was to note the date of receipt and use that as a yardstick for aging. I'd always prefer to have the code to know factory and packaging date though wouldn't be terribly bothered if I felt they were legitimate.
