I've been thinking that I want to add a box or 2 to my collection that I only smoke once a year on my birthday and perhaps another that I smoke on New Years eve or other special occasion.  I'm heading to the island in late November and was curious as to what the forum would recommend for those special occasion smokes.  The one caveat is that I need to have a high probability of finding said cigar while in country.  I have 2 solid days planned of nothing but cruising the LCDH's in search of the prized box(es).  FWIW, the Sir Winstons are on my short list.

Thoughts?

I think the all time no question can't beat it special occasion stick is the Montecristo A.  Just about any Cohiba will suit me for a above and beyond smoke.  Truth is though, you never know where the next great box is coming from. I've had boxes of regular production cigars that were utterly delicious and I'm not sure if anyone could have known that they would be the epic cigars that were worthy of hoarding before smoking them. '06 BCG and RASS, and '08 Siglo IV come to mind.

If I'm feeling special, I'll usually go with a Sir Winston or a Monte Esp., but if it's a really special occasion, I may go with my cigar best friend, the Punch Double Corona.

Mmmm... a 50 cab of Punch DC's.  That would get me through my remaining birthdays!

Since you're making a trip to Cuba soon I'm going to go the opposite direction and say peso cigars. Smoke like the Cuban Everyman for a day!

You should be able to find Monte A in Cuba. How about the new Montecristo Linea 1935 line? Otherwise, Siglo VI? Or a churchill or DC that you think you might enjoy.

Not sure there will be many boxes of Siglo VI's to be had.  But, definitely on the short list.

I had planned on that!

My go to special cigar is the Bolivar Libertador but if it's something really special, I will go for a Talisman, Robusto Supremo, or a Topes.

Are the books and humidors easy to find in Cuba?  Beyond what was mentioned, perhaps a regional or just a box that speaks to you when you see it.  Part of what will make that box special is that you picked it out on your trip to Cuba.  Each cigar is a memento of your time there.

I would also say customs, try a few out before buying a bundle to set aside. So many great choices in Havana.

On my last trip this year, I couldn't make to Havana but had Alphonso at the casa in Varadero make me some custom lanceros, out of this world!! that is what my money is on in when in Cuba.

Can be unpredictable as I see it. All the books I saw don't come with cigars. And humidors...I don't remember seeing anything that caught my eye, but I would save all the room for reg production or even just cigars in general

I think all of the above options are great choices, but you should take it one step further; get a box of cigars that is from a specific box code to commemorate the event for you. As for your birthday, that one will be really tough. But for example, I bought a box of Bolivar Coronas Gigantes from JUN of 16 to commemorate my wedding anniversary. It's disco'd which makes it a little more special, and the goal is to smoke one every year on my anniversary until they're gone. I got them in late 2017 so I've only had one, and it was an amazing cigar. If only I had 5 more boxes of them to smoke regularly!

For the last 2 years it has been the siglo VI(after they sat for 4 years). They're not worth the price of admission today so the search is on for an enjoyable replacement.

Perfect!  My birthday is June 16th, so send me that box.

Good idea though, it will give a little more relevancy to sorting through boxes.

Not to mention that they are scarce as hen's teeth in Cuba.

BTW, welcome aboard!

Pretty much any Churchill size, especially the Monte Dantes, or Cohiba.

I would love to get my hands on a box of Sir Winstons.

Aged Winnie, Lusi, Espy, Cola, Sig VI any Reserva if you have the coin. Something you look forward to smoking that is a real treat.
