99call Posted May 4, 2018 Posted May 4, 2018 WHY..........why............why? ABC's 'The Terror' is still some of the best new tv out there..........but Jesus, what it wrong with people? The real story of the Erebus and Terror, is one of lead poisoning, madness, and taboo cannibalism amongst royal naval ranks. Instead of telling that truly horrifying story these idiots decided to remove the cannibalism and lead poisoning, and add in a pathetic CGI freak polar bear!? This show is still fabulous, and they have used 50% of the story, and it's one of histories finest............but come on what it wrong with people?, why do we always feel as if we have to cater to the masses, by giving them the non-intelligent gruel that they crave? Do we not have enough horror movies with stupid monsters?, why not give them something truly horrifying, truly challenging..................... actual history! 1
Mossome Posted May 5, 2018 Posted May 5, 2018 The lead poisoning is still there. I’ve enjoyed it so far, but I’ve also taken it for what it is: a fictional tale based on an historical event. It’s not a documentary, just entertainment. I didn’t get worked up over Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter either. 1

I can agree to some extent, but my point is, is that the most entertaining version of the story, is the actual story, both for the everyday viewer, and the horror fan There are few stories in history where you can actually have the masses of blood and gore, that will attract the large horror market. But this is one of them. I huge mutant polar bear is less frightening than, your mates trying to eat you. You feel as if the writers have gone "right, how can we make this interesting for modern viewing audience". without given the viewing audience the credit of 'getting' the real story. Don't get me wrong, it's still brilliant, but ........it just saddens me, that everything has to be sensetionalized, or dumbed down, before hitting the screens.
JR Kipling Posted May 7, 2018 Posted May 7, 2018 I avoid t.v. and just about all current feature film offerings now. I do read a lot of history. It seems that most of the mass media output is either dumbed down, sanitized, or pushing a political agenda. Perhaps this is inevitable. Compare the 30 minutes, 1 hour, or approximately 2 hours that mass media has ones attention - versus the several hours involved in reading a substantial book. Greater depth & well developed opposing opinions are much more likely to be found in print. Unfortunately, few people (I’m speaking of Americans) read serious books today. 2
anacostiakat Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 I just started watching this. Saw the first two episodes. Was not familiar with the true story but while I enjoy the show mutant polar bears must grab more attention than cannibalism.
Hammer Smokin' Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 saw the first 10 episodes...which is the first season... I really enjoyed it UNTIL the stupid polar bear. To the point where I started telling myself it wasn't real, and that it was imagination of the sailors driven by insanity.... until I realized that it was supposed to be "real".....had a hard time finishing the season with the silly bear. But truly enjoyed the rest of the story line.

Yep, the idea of halucinations caused by T3 syndrom, Lead poisoning, scurvy, and just general desperation, if fascinating, and if part of the story, was a mass obsession and imagining of a mutant polar bear was a part of it, that would of been interesting.....But no! just a stupid waste. This it still very good TV, but it could of been truly great. Really pissed off with these air head writers. Lets hope they don't do Captain Scott's race to the pole, and cast him as a Necrophiliac Vampire.

If you haven’t already seen it, you should look up Monty Python’s sketch Scott of the Antarctic. In it the actor portraying Scott insists that he has to fight a lion. Because it is in his contract, they change it to Scott of the Sahara. It’s actually very funny.
PigFish Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 ... the polar bear is a metaphor for the sadness of the atavistic behavior of man... modern or otherwise! . . . . . . .... and if you bought into that for just one second, you have to realize that gullibility of man never changes, because I have no idea what this program is all about! I don't watch any 'made for TV, TV.... -LOL However, TV, is as always, predictable as death and taxes!!! Sorry Stefan...

If the writers of this were overjoyed with themselves in scripting in a mutant polar bear to this storyline. Suggesting it was a curse driven up by the Inuit people for wrongdoings etc etc. I hope that this trend continues, and the writers are to be cursed and pursued by cannibal British naval seamen zombies all around LA, for crimes against history! I still wouldn't be interested watching it however. Gladly usually these sorts of stories get made again by the BBC, and although they will have a fraction of the money, It wont be created my fantasists.

I'm not sure if you've heard of him, but Adam Curtis is a great documentary maker. He has a very interesting, concise skill of covering the undercurrents of history in a quite illuminating way. 1
