Question for the Cigar connoisseur's that buy hard to get and find RE's and LE's

Recommended Posts

I visit other sites that people are selling Lebanese RE's and other hard to find and get LE's for quite a bit of cash. My question is, do the connoisseur's buying these actually smoke them? I bought some 09 RA Celestial Finos, and I have no qualms about smoking them. They are a really good smoke. Burn erratically (like the RG 88's), but have really good flavors. So if I bought these cigars, I definitely would smoke them.

There are three types of Cigar purchasers:

1. Smoker (me and most of FoH)

2. Collector (will buy rare CC boxes and never smoke or sell any. There types just like to post pictures of full boxes they never smoke and tell everyone how awesome it is that they have 20 boxes of the ‘72 Cohiba XXX - but they wouldn’t dare smoke one because “it would break up the box”)

3. Flipper/Profiteer (these are folks that buy all of aged stuff and Gran Reserva CCs in 15 seconds from 24:24 so they can flip at some point in the future for 3x-5x the price. They don’t care about cigars just the money)

*For the collectors who meet descriptions No. 1 and No. 3:  No. 1 (IMHO) makes the most sense as far as collectibility and enjoyment: No.3, while somewhat morally questionable - eh, what are ya gonna do, huh?     Enterprisers are everywhere and I suppose they have a place and a niche too as far as satisfying a high demand.

For collector described in No. 2...to me, this makes NO sense.  As my mom had to school me on practicality when I told her how much overkill work I was putting myself through on behalf of my newly adopted stray dog: she said, "The dog is there for your convenience; you're not there for the dog's convenience."  So - food, water, shelter, and a little self-actualization given the pet from me (for the benefit of those who might think I was talking about going from all care...to NO care!) I look at that person described in Buck14's No. 2, as a person ruled and governed by his collection, instead of his collection serving him. Unless it's a painting, portrait, plate display case or something like that...I would NEVER  have an item of consumable enjoyment on hand that I was destined NEVER to use or enjoy! I mean - WHAT'S THE POINT!???   SMOKE THOSE BAD BOYS!  Sure, you can keep some on hand to age and to go to later on...but  NEVER...?  Just to keep from breaking up a box!? Please

I sometimes buy HTF boxes (since lots of HTF cigars only ever become available as full boxes), then take the 3 - 5 cigars I actually have time to smoke, and sell the remainder in packs.

If one of these releases popped up that caught my eye and I could get one for a reasonable cost, I’d rest it for a while and admire it a bit every now and then. I’d eventually tear in with a vengeance assuming they were smoking well, then eventually display the box/jar/etc in my cave. If I never got around to trying them and I wanted to liquidate some stock for extra cash, I’d sell it at cost to someone I respect (or a premium if I didn’t ;))

I satarted to buy ERs and ELs just for smoke. but in case I'm in cigar business I decided to sell those as well. so, I have about of 50 different ERs and ELs, smoke all of them and selling all of them via my lounges.

I buy with the plan on smoking them, but if years or decades go by and I don't get to the box, don't smoke so much from the box, and the value is 2-3+x more than I paid I will consider a trade or sale.  It's not like those boxes are really going to impact me as I am not smoking them often or have ever smoked them.  Wasn't my intention, but the reality at that moment.   Someone else will get more enjoyment from them and I have some extra cash for other boxes.

1.1 The Bander: he/she smokes bands. The cigar is just a rolled detail.

4 of the 5 greatest CC cigars I’ve smoked are regular production, single banders. My best ever was a Cuban puro freshly rolled in Munich, Germany, by a Cuban Torcedor I forgot the name of. Was like a 52 x 6.25 or so parejo. Purchased 40 of them blind. Smoked about 25 and gave the other 15 away to buddies. Went into a shop in Munich about one minute to close, owner thought I was some idiot tourist, I don’t blame him I had had a couple at that point. And they don’t eff around in Germany if they are open until 8 they close at 8, not at 8:01 or 7:59.

Anyway he pointed me toward the Cohibas and I just laughed. The I saw he had a ziploc bag of sticks he was putting away out of sight under the counter. I said what the hell are those. He said they were freshly rolled 24 hours ago and that I wouldn’t be interested in them. Well that settled it. His shop got 200 and another one in Munich got 200. I ended up buying a couple boxes of Ramons and Trinis too and we went out smoming and drinking with the owner. Great night. Those are gone forever and they will not be getting more in - already checked.

True confession. 75% of my collection is the second choice. It gives me great collecting joy. Similar to collecting stamps. It is a much better investment than money in the bank these days when I sell my paintings I create in my studio. I know I could sell the whole collection to friends in a couple of days. They would love the rare ones!
