Good evening ladies and gentlemen,

Just want to know if any of you good people have any advice. Out on the back patio enjoying a wonderful partagas E2. The dog runs off like a lunatic, and then a wonderful smell wafts by. The lovely Aroma of a skunk. The little bastard has yellow skunk spray all over him. Shooting him is not an option, so what do you think I should do. Mind you it's 8:15 p.m. on Sunday night and I have to be at work early in the morning. Looking forward to hearing your suggestions.

Yikes!

The old stand by is tomato juice bath. I’ve heard an apple cider vinegar/water solution also works. The degree of success is debatable, but either should greatly reduce the funkiness!

Good luck. My English Bulldog killed 2 in our backyard about 3 Summers ago. When the smell finally wore off he cornered another one and the dumbass got sprayed again. Tomato sauce worked the best but he still smelled pretty bad. Needless to say he was not allowed inside for awhile. On a bright note, his last run in seemed to take care of our skunk problem.

Too late for you to go out and buy enough tomato juice, and frankly it doesn't work all that great anyway.  Tried it a couple times on my dog (long hair) and it was so-so.  Regular dish soap and the like seems about as good.  Either way you're not letting him in the house tonight!

Tomato juice doesn't work all that well from what I've seen. Try white vinegar and lemon juice. My border collie got sprayed a few years ago and that cut the smell the fastest, but you'll need to do it a few times. It won't get rid of it 100%, but it's better than the alternatives. Probably will still need a few days outside if that's an option.

Shave him. There's a thread about razors at the mo which might give you some product ideas...

After trying to clean our idiot, I mean dog, ourselves, we left him in the garage overnight. The next day, we brought him to the nearest pet store / groomer, in our case, Pet Smart. They washed him down to point we could let him back into the house, using some kind of soap that left a very perfumey, yet non skunk smell. Word of warning though...every time the dog gets a little wet for the next couple months, the skunk smell comes right back, until he / she dries off.

Good luck,

Have those pesky varmits all over around here. The animal control guys told me he used Dawn dishsoap on himself and his clothes. Said it was the only thing he has found which works. Have to trust him as he should know, although I've not had to try it yet.

Having been through this :

NEVER use water - all that does is cause the stink to seep into the skin, and stay a lot longer.

The best thing to do is keep the dog dry and get some "skunk off" and treat the animal.

Oh, and don't bother with the haircut either, if the stink is in the skin.

Dawn dish soap has worked for me in the past. My wife also made some concoction with apple cider vinegar. Nothing is going to take it away. You just have to keep bathing them to cut the smell.

    * There's some kind of "Skunk - away" concoction on hand at your local pet specialty stores. I too had read that baking soda along with liquid dishwashing soap is supposed to help a lot. And what do you know - some of you have knuckle-headed dimwits like my Jack Russell! He too could get sprayed by a skunk (thank The Lord it hasn't happened yet), and after everything was done - he'd go off and attack another one again. Before we adopted him as a stray off the street (because we were afraid somebody was gonna hurt him one day, what with his habit of chasing and barking at people's heels - although I don't think he's actually bitten anybody) - he'd been pepper sprayed by the mailman for that habit at least a dozen times, my neighbor told me. You'd THINK that would dissuade him from further stupidity with the mailman. But no - he'd go somewhere, wipe his eyes with his paw; and the next day when the mailman came - he'd be at it again. So he probably wouldn't learn his lesson from being skunk sprayed too. And that whole incident, based on God's gift of that particular weapon in skunks together with those recognizable markings, are supposed to discourage that animal or person from ever screwing with one again; alas, some dogs or other animals - are IDIOTS :dunce:

Squarehead is correct.

Just read an article about this last week.

As an owner of several hunting dogs I was keen to know the solution.

Chemist Krebaum came up with it.

1 quart Hydrogen Peroxide

1/4 cup baking soda

1 teaspoon liquid dish soap

As a Veterinarian and an owner of a German Shepard that loves to play with skunks I have a bit of experience with this.

first off - nothing works great.

If you have a pick up truck - put him in the bed and go for a drive. you won't believe how much of the smell goes away just by airing him out. If the wife has the truck I put an old sheet in the back seat and put down the top and go for a drive.

remove the collar - wash or throw it away. You would be surprised at how often someones dog keep getting a bath because they take off the collar , bathe him then put it back on and he still smells.

Forget tomato juice. the skunk formula above works pretty well. Personally I use chlorhexadine surgical scrub (any drug store/chemist will have some) as a primary shampoo, and then any shampoo with benzoyl peroxide to clean out anything that got into his pores if he still smells after the first bath.

good luck.

I own a pet store. We recommend a product called Nature’s Miracle Skunk. It works and we sell a bunch of it. It’s a guaranteed product. If it doesn’t work you can take it back for a refund.  We always have a bottle at home just in case.

Thank you to everyone who provided their input.  Much appreciated.  As an update, I just decided to take him to the next town over and put him out of the car.  He is a smart dog...he will catch on with some family and be fine.

Obviously just kidding...the wife wouldn't get on board and nixed that plan :)

In all seriousness though.  First I hosed him off.  Then I sprayed him with a combo of vinegar, dawn, and water.  Then applied some essential oil peppermint.  He still stank like death so he slept in the laundry room.  Now my laundry room stinks like death.

Next morning, sprayed him some more with lavender essential oil and put him outside.  Still stinks...but less.

Came home and he got another dose of peppermint and lavender...still stinks...but a little bit less.

This morning I just shot him...ok...just kidding again...more lavender.

I'm just going to leave the poor bastard alone tonight.  Tomorrow I have time to wake up and give him that peroxide/baking soda/etc. bath and see how that works.  I will let everyone  know how that turns out.

Just gave the little fella a bath with peroxide/baking soda/dish soap.  He seemed to enjoy it and he sure smells a lot better.  I still get a touch of it but I must say its about 95% better than it was.

Thanks for all the tips.  Hopefully he remembers what those black and white things are and decides against trying to eat one again.
