William Burroughs, the brilliant Harvard-educated writer, shot and killed his common-law wife, Joan Vollmer, in a game of “William Tell” gone wrong.

Making a horrible decision with a firearm doesn't seem to me to be a generational affliction, or even the exclusive purview of stupid people.

The only new thing is the easy ability to broadcast that horrible decision to the whole world.

This happened just north of where i live.  Who in the right mind goes down range and holds the target that's going to be shot.  With a DE chambered in 50 ae?  The bullet is half an inch thick, the shell is longer than a 44 magnum is with the bullet in it.  It boggles the mind that these 2 idiots thought it'd be funny to shoot a book with it.  Of course the book isn't going to stop the damn bullet.

The sad part is the mom is going to be in jail for probably 10-15 years for felonious levels of stupidity, the 3 yo son doesn't have a dad anymore or a mom for years to come, and the unborn kid won't ever know his dad (no matter how stupid an idea this was) but also won't know their mom till their teen years.

Felonious levels of stupidity there.

Yeesh. I hope she doesn't get that many years. She probably deserves some amount of jail/prison time, but this is clearly a (pathetically stupid) accidental death in a stunt the "victim" proposed, and I don't know how prison time is supposed to make things better.

Or was that just a clever defence for shooting his wife? Come on,  think about it, even if it started as a game, you suddenly realise, hey, wait a minute,  I could blatantly get away with this! Living the dream...

... a good argument for basic firearms training being taught in public schools!

Knowing how to properly use, respect of or even dispose of (if you are so inclined) firearms should be basic training for everyone. If we can educate people how to use a condem in school, why not, how not to be safe with a firearm?

I have to agree, these people are stupid, yet a system is in place in most counties to teach and therefore make people less ignorant. Ignorance played a significant role here.

It is funny that when some college professor does something stupid it is no longer a matter of stupidity... or is it? Stupid people find the way into all walks of life. And of course, while one act of stupidity does not define stupid, it may mark one as stupid for the rest of his/her life!!!

I have to wonder if any of the parties were drunk... Alas, that is another issue!

... after reading the story (more carefully), I have to say that the couple are not the only stupid people in their neighborhood. It would appear that of the 30 something present, there was not a full brain to be found in the group as a whole!

Apparently stupidity and ignorance are contagious! As more than one party was to be found at the professors incident as well, his wife and a bar full of drunken friends, the theory appears sound!

Hang out with stupid people and stupid things will happen... An axiom to live (or die) by!

That is the dumbest shit I've ever seen.

She's 19 and already has a 3 year old, that's all the information I need to know what a moron she is.

If I were there I'd probably think it's some kind of stunt with a fake gun, because nobody can be that stupid...

You can't fix stupid.

Sure you can, the problem is "society" frowns on it.
On the bright side, stupid is often a self cleaning oven.

Not necessarily, though certainly likely.
Scenario 2 - You've got an idiot with a loaded gun, happy to immediately shoot someone in the chest. Who's going to be the one to put their hand up and say "just a minute...I see a flaw in your plan"?

I read this the other day, showed it to my boy to illustrate why I stress safety even with his nerf guns.  Realistically she probably won't do any jail time, probably their state's version of criminally negligent homicide largely because the victim was a willing participant.  Never understood the drive to be famous.  Like others, I feel sorry for the children, they are going to have a weird life and you know some a-hole is going to find and show them the video at some point.

Consider the American cult of Celebrity and Victimhood.

Chances are the kids will turn this into a book and a daytime TV movie and then tour the chat show circuit telling their sad tale of woe.

Hey, it's a living...

Stupid people do stupid things. They will find all sorts of instruments for doing so.

Ever see a photo of someone hanging off a high place with a stupid grin on their face . . . right before plunging to their premature demise ?   Well, there are lots of such photos. We cannot legislate against high buildings, bridges, or cliffs. . . . or stupidity.

And special award for the law that allows these morons to possess a weapon of this caliber…

Without going down the path of discussion in detail, it's not the particular caliber of firearm that was the problem. Very modest caliber handguns can fire bullets capable of penetrating a dry phonebook.

The problem was that they were morons.

Nothing wrong with that, I too discuss even Nerf with my son, pointing it down while not using it in the environment he's supposed to or without safety goggles. And this is just NERF!

A quote comes to mind here:
