PigFish Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 What you call capsicum I call capsaicin! I get that. Most of us are not brushed up on the latest "cigar power words." I concentrated more on the extreme comments, than the comments of similarity. I am very much with the poster who indicated that it is best not to read the reviews (or notes) of others prior to posting one's own. I do believe that it has an effect. Case in point, and this gets me wondering some. I have been looking to replace a favorite cigar of mine from days past. That was the RS12. So last year I bought some Punch tubos, I forget what they call them, I will simply call them PC's in tubes. I have smoked half the box now, and 'some' (as well as I can remember) taste 'somewhat' like the RS12 that I liked so much. I often think, because they are Punch cigars and I know it, is this the reason that I am making the link, or, is my memory good enough and are these cigars really tasting the same? Is this a "Punch profile" that I remember? Ultimately I will never know. I would have to smoke one of the better samples blind and pull it out of a barrel and name it. If I have smoked, say 12 of these, about 3 have been this way and very good. The rest have been a range of above average to below average. The fill is the killer and I have chucked a couple... A couple have been just trash, but since sold as Punch cigars, they make up a range of cigars that must be called "Punch profile" cigars because the company that defines what a Punch cigar tastes like, labeled them and sold them to me. I don't know how to answer the question then. If properly made, would they all taste like this, the good ones? Are these, the good ones, the flukes? Either way, with a mix like this I am still comfortable saying the brand profile, if anything is average garbage, there isn't one! That is the shame of it. Is it my mind playing games with me? I don't know. Having smoked hundreds of RS12s and being a big fan of them, I wanted these new cigars to taste like a memory. If they all did, right or wrong I would have been happy about it. But with about 25% making the grade as good cigars, the profile, inclusive of the rest, if there is one, is certainly not what I remember and certainly not that good! Cheers mates! -R 1
KFBR392 Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 Great cigar, definitely doesn't taste like burnt dog turd. Construction and burn were perfect. I feel like I've had these flavors before but I can't put my finger on it. I should be able to knock a couple marcas out. Going to Be a guess though.
Habana Mike Posted June 4, 2017 Posted June 4, 2017 Thinking back to #2 and the consistent inconsistencies (seemed to be two disparate though common perceptions) I consider that given inconsistencies the between cigars from within a single box, there is bound to be even more inconsistency across boxes. With the number of folks participating I believe the smokes smoked came from 4 different boxes. Same codes I couldn't say.... 1

Bennettjohnl Posted June 4, 2017 Posted June 4, 2017 Coffee and light chocolate pre light along with prunes. 1/3 mild-medium body, coffee and chocolate hints of leather and wood. More leather and wood chocolate fading. 2/3 More leather wood/cedar slight sweetness coming back. Slightly sweet dark chocolate with wood and leather dominating. Rich mushrooms and depth of flavors developing. Body picking up. Finishing second third chocolate still building mushrooms very present with the wood and cedar under it all. 3/3 sweetness fading dark chocolate even stronger. Mushrooms very prevalent cedar and leather still here. May be hints of cream but mainly I'm smelling it and not tasting it. Chocolate even stronger, finishing up around medium to full strength. Very nice cigar. Dark chocolate, leather, wood, mushrooms, and at times a light sweetness. Not a whole lot of progression just varying degrees of which element was dominating the others.

Regarding the differences in taste, while I don't know the smoker, the guy/gal I quoted, I would assume that others got a much better cigar than he did. If there is an error to be made here, I am going to say it is giving Tabacuba a pass, and blaming their quality control on a guy who happens to get one of their cigars that tastes like crap! Anyone smoking Cuban cigars that has not had a bad one, simply has not smoked many of them, or they may just like the taste of crappy cigars! Cuba turns out its share of shit and there is no accounting for taste. JMHO! -the Pig 1
hoffmr3 Posted June 4, 2017 Posted June 4, 2017 In spite of storing at 65°/65% and dry-boxing for a day, this specimen was plugged for me. I couldn't feel a knot anywhere, so I fought hard for the first half in hopes that I could smoke through it. Resorted to punching through at the halfway mark, which finally opened the cigar enough to get some flavor. Aroma at cold was leather and hints of wood. First half was a throwaway due to the aforementioned plug. Second half was mostly aged leather with some mild hints of raisin and spice. Purged the cigar in the final third, after which the hints of raisin and spice were at their most consistent (albeit, still light). Not a bad half-cigar at all, but it's really hard to judge based on such a small sample. I might grab a few singles after the reveal to try again.
zeedubbya Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 Smoked number 3 tonight. Admittedly I am horrible at this, but I believe I narrowed it down to 2. Predominant flavor in my sample was baking spice--that cinnamon/nutmeg flavor. Started out full bodied, dropped to medium then back up to full. Very nice cigar. Dark coffee and leather crept in late with the baking spice still there. Burn was a little weird but never a problem. I tasted no chocolate in this cigar unless I don't know what chocolate actually tastes like which is quite possible! Really enjoyed it. Best of the size I've had this year, but admittedly I haven't smoked many Torpedos. Sending over my guess now. Thanks Czar team! So much fun, even if it's not right. **Oh yeah and the bite mark is from having to drive in a flooding rainstorm while smoking...not an easy task...

busdriver Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 Enjoyed Cigar 3 and trying to decide whether to go with instinct or flavor on this one...... 1st Third opened just under medium body with cream, wood and toasted tobacco 2nd Third got a little sweet with yoasted tobacco and cream 3rd Third lashings of cream with slight nuttiness right up to the end. Decisions, decisions.
schquigly Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 Smoked cigar #3 the other day. It was well rolled and packed and looked really good. The wrapper was smooth and even-colored. The cigar smelled like hay to me, and while smoking was very creamy leathery and woody. I thought given the vitola that this would be an easier one to pin down but I am completely guessing as to what this is. It kind of had elements from every brand it could be. So I'll swing at this one but I am basically blindfolded on my answer. Good Luck Everybody Else
Head83 Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 These reviews are all over the place. It's amazing how everyone's tastes differ when they don't know what they are smoking. I think our heads play with our tastes more than we realize. 3
MrGlass Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 I smoked this one over the weekend. There was a small hole in the wrapper, most likely from when the band was removed. And although I had my concerns about this, this didn't end up causing any problems. The construction was good, only needing a few touchups along the way and the draw was perfect. The cigar opened with hints of chocolate which faded pretty quickly. There was also leather and spice elements throughout the first third. The second third saw the body beginning to build slightly, although it was still fairly light, with leather proving to be the predominant flavour. The body then kicked it up another notch for the final third, which was exactly like drinking an espresso. I'm none from two right now, and expecting to be none from three when this one is announced. But it's a fun exercise regardless.

Me, I think most of us know what chocolate and coffee tastes like. What I see is not individual taste but a large variance in cigars with a factor for language. Face it, people can taste the exact same thing and describe it differently but having smoked thousands of Cuban cigars, I know that no two are exactly alike and the box they come from makes very little difference in the life or tasted of an individual cigar. I think it is fair game to call a bad cigar bad! Some of them are!! It is fair to call the good ones good as well... Cheers! -Piggy
