An issue or Tobacco Terroir?

God forbid the number of US cigar companies playing fast and loose with the term "Havana"

Members of Connecticut’s congressional delegation want federal officials to enforce existing regulations on tobacco labeling, accusing foreign competitors of mislabeling their cigars as Connecticut shade tobacco.

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy and Reps. John Larson and Joe Courtney, all Democrats, sent a letter Monday to the acting commissioner and acting chairman of the Food and Drug Administration and Federal Trade Commission, seeking action.

Connecticut shade tobacco, which is used as a wrapper for premium cigars, is renowned worldwide. The lawmakers say the Connecticut shade tobacco seeds are now grown elsewhere in the Northeast, as well as in Ecuador and other parts of Latin America. They say the different soils and climate conditions can change the taste greatly.

They say labels contain the word “Connecticut” but unclear information about the tobacco’s origin.

I live in Conn. and when I have either work or want to take a drive I head up to the Conn. river valley

and check how the tabac crops are doing during the growing season.  Dotted along the tabac fields

are huge barns for storing / curring.  I guess in Conn. we have shade grown and broad leaf tabac.

I noticed that the a lot of Nic's use this leaf for the wrapper part of the stoogie.  Love looking at

rows and rows of tabac as I drive along and smoke a CC.  What a hoot!

Awesome! No more "Havana seed" this and "from seeds smuggled out of Cuba" that.

I thought "Connecticut" was a varietal of black tobacco, and so made no difference of where it was grown? If so, I guess they should have come up with a more-original, catchier name like "Corojo" or "Criollo." I don't believe the US has tight AOC regulation like Europe.

While I know Connecticut tobaccos come from Connecticut, it seems the NC industry also uses the word Connecticut as a colour description now like Rosado
Kinda hard to trademark a colloquialism

The Australian Sheepskin Association is trying to make "Ugg" a regional mark (eg Champagne), so that it will negate the trademark status.

fuzz, you sure that was not a report from april 1?

or perhaps they are just trying to pull the wool over your eyes. how on earth is Ugg regional? unless it comes from Middle Earth.

and i'll bet that the history of ugg boots does not start with some bloke making boots out of wool from a single region, at least not intentionally.

Nope. It's been bounced around for a while. The idea was to stop Deckers from constantly taking people to court over the use of the word "ugg".

I personal think of the word ugg as a descriptive term to mean a type of boot, not a specific brand.

Single farm EL releases!  I want the batch that Lucy the cows dung was used to fertilize the plants!  I will not buy cigars rolled where Sally the cows dung was used because her breeding isn't documented back more than 10 generations!
