1LegLance Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 I am always curious if I am the odd ball or normal in life and this is one area I can at least check with you folks... I have some local buddies that either don't have the storage capacity (or desire), budget or knowledge to pick up boxes for themselves. Then there are the guys who are scared of a nasty letter here in the states. I have gotten used to stocking up on sticks I kinda like but have some buddies that love them. I have gotten used to buying a box to lay down and wishing I had kept more when they are perfect and have enjoying being able to unload sticks I no longer care for due to my taste changing. For me it is normal to order boxes for aging, trying or just out of pure impulse....and I know that is not always the norm so being able to spread the Habanos love around is fun. So just curious how many of you also order for yourself knowing you will either split in advance or will split up a box sooner or later?
SaintMickey® Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 These words...these words that you speak. SPLIT and FRIENDS? I don't understand... I hope someone here can help you though. 4
1LegLance Posted March 28, 2017 Author Posted March 28, 2017 Oh I am not looking for help....I am just curious if other folks enjoy the role of cigar hub? I admit to really enjoying having my patio be a place where buddies come over and try something then get excited and take a few home. Also it is fun to know that someone who doesn't have either the budget or desire to buy 25 of the same stick can still have the sticks and the joy of box fondleing. I admit to going through cycles where I hoard everything except what a buddy ask me to order, and then cycles where I impulse buy a ton of sticks and then see who likes what. The really interesting thing is my 19yr old son has become a serious cigar dude and now I have to remember to double check with him before I let too many of something fly away.
canadianbeaver Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 I do. I live in a small town and a good friend loves the idea that we have awesome quality CC's he can share with me sometimes. Not a dealer by even a joke. Just a friend I can help enjoy the CC's. CB 1
Jimmy_jack Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 Don't really have any smoking buddies here Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Lotusguy Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 Most of my good buddies are incurable NC smokers - though they do enjoy the CCs I usually bring with me. 1
JohnS Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 For Australians, due to taxes, it becomes a sensible method for sampling Limited and Regional Editions. Or sometimes we just like to have a mix of cigars in our humidors without committing to a whole box. 2
Texwrangler Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 I'll split a box with fellow golfers but only those cigars I've lost interest in, are not smoking well, or on my clearance list. My preferred stocked I tend to hoard, those are like my babies and I'm very protective of them, LOL
BrightonCorgi Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 I don't like to split boxes. I don't want to waste space in cabinet with half full box that I didn't even smoke to get it that way. What I will do is buy a bunch of 10 count boxes and divide those among friends not looking to own a 25 count box. Recently picked up a few Punch Punch 10 count tubos that are fantastic. Waiting for my friends to come by and pick up their boxes. 1
beparrish Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 I have a friend at the local shop that I have split boxes with in the past. Personally, I'd rather lay 25 cigars down for aging rather than 12 or 13, but he doesn't have a large cigar budget and this helps him out. Small price to pay to help a buddy.
Inthestix Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 I am relatively new to the cc arena. I have had the opportunity to sample a few aged ccs. Split box makes great sense to me at this point because of limited space and trying to stay on some sort of budget. I may get to the point where I would be interested in splitting a box, but for now I am in the process of seeing what I like before committing to any kind of a box purchase. I would give my entire collection away and just buy 10ers as needed to have the wonderful cigar bar you go to every week! 2
83Nation Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 My neighbor and I use to split boxes because:A: he didn't have a humidorB: he felt bad for smoking all of my cigarsHe's since gotten a humidor, and now we order 2 boxes at a time Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

SloppyJ Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 When i first started out I never bought a box by myself. I had one buddy who would split them with me so we could figure out what we liked. Now I have a group text setup with multiple buddies. If we see something we want, we get it and split it. I still make solo purchases on boxes that I know I will want to keep and age. It's a great way to try a bunch of different cigars to figure out what you enjoy. My buddies only have desktop humidors so they get pretty picky and I'm over here playing tetris in my wineador. 1

Inthestix Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 I can supply you my address if you are going to give your collection away sir. No sense in it going to waste. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1
mrwhitt Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 I've split in the past but it's typically all or none for me. I'm newer to CCs and my only trading partner has some 100 boxes of all ages so it's hard to figure out a trade that interests him.

merkonakis Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 I used to split with @scap_99 but he got a massive new humidor and doesn't need my puny half box. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
feral Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 Absolutely , splitting boxes allows us to try something different.

rhcolbert Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 Used to split everything with a buddy or two who lived around Vancouver. Now I just get the whole thing. Too many times I regretted not doing so. 2
