Popular Post mwaller Posted January 12, 2017 Popular Post Posted January 12, 2017 My tradition, as of late, is to take a nighttime cigar walk once the kids are in bed and the household chores have been done. Last night, I was having trouble deciding between two torpedoes that had been occupying my thoughts - the Diplomaticos No. 2 and the Vegas Robaina Unicos... so I decided to grab them both for an impromptu side by side comparison. I had smoked one each of these cigars a few months back when they arrived. The Unicos was a bit of a disappointment at the time as it was clearly too young and bitter for my palate. The No. 2, on the other hand, was pleasingly mellow and flavorful. I had not expected this from a stick that is sometimes billed as a cheap Montecristo No. 2! Fast forward to last night when both cigars had enjoyed the benefit of a few more months in the humidor... Upon lighting, both cigars hit the ground running with rich creamy and nutty flavors- an excellent start! The Unicos was clearly the stronger of the two, and displayed a bit of spice with a tannic herbal note on top. As the flavors intensified, the No. 2 developed hints of hazelnut and cocoa. The spice of the Unicos subsided and was replaced by dark chocolate flavor that continued through much of the 2nd half of the stick. In the latter third, the No. 2 displayed some interesting and unexpected floral notes while maintaining its smooth and steady core of nuts and cream. The Unicos, by contrast ramped back up in spice, and took on a pleasing marzipan character. All in all, two excellent cigars! Highly recommended! Thanks for reading, Mwaller 8
dflan82 Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 Nice side-by-side review. My initial experience with the Unicos was similar to yours, so I am looking forward to trying the next one. Thanks for sharing
Sean3 Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 Excellent review. Love the Unicos and have some Dip 2's currently resting.
TheBaron Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 I've found with VR (Unicos and Famosos) a bit of time down makes a huge difference. They go from fairly "meh" to "ohmygodohmygodohmygod!". Thanks for the review. Gotta get me some of those Dip 2s...
Shikar Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 Excellent review and much appreciated. I had the H. Upmann 2 last night and it is a little more spicy than I prefer. I find it even more spicy peppery than the VR. Regards.
KRunch61 Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 Smoking TWO cigars simultaneously....very impressive!:)

I have a few Upmann No. 2 singles (unknown date code) that I try from time to time. The last one I had smoked OK for about 1 1/2 inches, then turned bitter on me. I'm not sure what the big fuss is about.

I totally agree, the H upmann is not a cigar I prefer either, but this box of 2 is dark oily and smells bloody amazing....it's just not the taste I prefer to smoke. I hear you saying you don't like Upmann, just as I can't stand Cohiba.......BUT do try the Sir Winnie, that is one Upmann that is not an Upmann, it's in a league of its own. Regards.
mwaller Posted January 14, 2017 Author Posted January 14, 2017 Can you tell me more about these Sir Winstons? I hear a lot of positive comments about them, but I've never really reseached. Thanks!

I had one last night to cap off my birthday celebration and they are phenomenal. 6th one out of a box from 2014 I believe (writing this away from my humidor). Construction is just what I prefer, well packed with a firmish draw, perfect burn line with excellent ash retention. Flavor wise I consider it mild medium with cream as a predominant note throughout, though the mouthful is extraordinarily smooth and velvety. I'm not an expert, but I also detect notes of stone fruit in the second third along with coffee and some mild earth notes. Smoked it to the nub in about two hours and nothing bad to say about the experience. Paired nicely with an espresso imperial Porter and a kriek. 1

nathankwok Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 Thanks for the review! They look very delicious! I don't have these two cigars but i will get them very soon!
Mattb82 Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 Very nice, I've been having a smoke as I walk the dog each night.
