Jimmy_jack Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 Okay, silly question but I have to know. How in the hell are some of these people getting an ash as long as the original cigar? I see these pictures of cigar ashes, intact and the full length of the original cigar. To top it off the cigars are sitting upright on the ash. Is it fake? Is it photoshop? Some strange ancient Egyptian smoking technique? Or perhaps an unfurled paper clip inserted into the cigar before smoking... i have to know.
Ken Gargett Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 i suspect a well made cigar is a starter. my first ever SLR DC had an ash that was between 2/3rds and 3/4s long before it broke away. never been able to repeat that. 1
Mattb82 Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 This was a couple days ago. I think it could have gone further. I think it's hit or miss on ash holding this long and just slow movement when it gets long. The pic you posted is nuts 2
El Hoze Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 My understanding is that one trick some people use to get an "unnaturally" long ash is to hold the cigar either upright (ie, foot to the sky) or the opposite as you've shown w that Sig VI GR (ie, foot to the floor) and keeping it that way as the thing smokes. By not holding the ash parallel to the floor you give it more chance of not "breaking". I believe most "naturally long" pics you see here on the forum (eg, Matt's Monte) are simply good construction, a thicker ring gauge helps, and an expert touch. That GR, even being about as solidly constructed as a cigar can be, likely had some help by being held in that exact position as it was smoked would be my guess. My significant other is from Santiago DR and her Instagram is always full of pictures of guys showing off the quality of their Dominican cigars with abnormally long ash, to which I usually roll my eyes. 1
SaintMickey® Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 I don't think it's a good thing necessarily...right? I mean a little ash is fine but I feel it has an effect on draw and potentially flavor as your smoking through all that ash?I'll give you that it looks like a fun thing to try...once. Let me know if I'm missing something here...Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1
Trigga Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 @Jimmy_jack That guys ashes are definitely real. He has a website, and I've read interviews with him talking about his long ashes. There are also several videos hes posted to prove it. The cigar is still smoking and burning and he'll crack off the ash in one solid chunk. I think half of it is a perfectly constructed cigar, and half of it is experience. Although I also imagine a big part of this experience has helped his ability to pick out a cigar that has the potential for long ash... 1
jazzboypro Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 I may be wrong but i don't see the point/reason of letting the ash get so long, I usually get rid of it when it gets about an inch long sometimes less. 2
garbandz Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 technique.......... some ash on the tip will help to keep a cigar cooler in a breeze,I have read.... 1
torsion Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 Impressive long ashes but way too stressful for a personal attempt. On occasion and construction permitting probably got close to 2 inches before knocking it off in fear of wearing the ash! 1
Fugu Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 Ludicrous. Sometimes a firm ash won't fall on tapping. Fine. But if you have to perform special contortions to keep it stay.... absurd. 3
SaintMickey® Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 Yeah that looks enjoyable...NOT. Exactly how I enjoy my cigars also I get less nose bleeds this way. ? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1
TheLiquidGator Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 After a few cocktails my hands never shake. 1
Jimmy_jack Posted December 27, 2016 Author Posted December 27, 2016 Well damn. Suppose I'm enjoying the smoke to much to worry about all that technique. Interesting though.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1
topdiesel Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 It is not fun for me. I prefer to relax while I smoke and that requires way too much attention and focus. But the first pointer would be great construction and not a skinny cigar. Next is to do it indoors so there is no breeze or wind. hold cigar vertical. Wear Glasses. have ice, beer or pain medicine for your neck. 1
Dave001 Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 I guess we can always install a television on the ceiling and smoke at the same time, there you go long ash problem solved lol 1
El Hoze Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 Decent ash on a Bolivar CG, when I am at home I generally try to hold the ash if I can. I don't believe it detracts from the flavor, maybe the opposite. Drives my girlfriend nuts when I drop ash on the floor but generally I know the timing. 1
Pharmacovigilant Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 Held vertically on a calm night just to see what would happen.... 2
GavLew79 Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 Haters might say Why? Why even bother? Just tap it off when it's ready, rather than wear the ash or post some vulgar "look at me!" photo.
Fuzz Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 So many people leaving their draw poker in their cigars when smoking....
Aardwolf Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Managed to get a nice one with an AF Hemingway Best Seller figurado a few months back.

His guests got so focussed on when the ash would fall off they forgot to argue their point. Sent from my GT-N5110 using Tapatalk If true, that's some weak minded guests. In the modern boardroom, the clothing of some female "sales/marketing" people is a lot more distracting.
