Clearing up my humidor when I found these 2 sticks given by a friend a couple of years ago on his daughter's 21st birthday. Should be 1993 sticks based on his daughter's year of birth. Upmann Monarch and Punch Churchill. Any thoughts on what I should expect from them?

A damn good smoke I would guess.... I love how tubos age if stored properly... the Monarch is not going to be a mind blowingly good cigar, but I bet the age has done them well.

And the old Upmann sticks in the brushed alum tubes are always a good find.

Im sure someone can elaborate much more, but they should be pretty good cigars.

Damn I'd love to find some Monarchs!  Please report back once you've set them to flame. :cigar:

Last I heard about the Monarchs was that the tubed 00-01 vintage are very good but not great and that the non-tubed versions from 98-01 are excellent. Some positive reviews of some from 06-07 tubes  that I've seen. There's a FOH video review of a SCO JUL 00 non-tubed.

Let us know how it goes!

Context:

I rarely just smoked the same cigar over and over again.  I love variety and constantly varying what I smoke.  With that said . . .

I bought a box of 2007 Monarch's on a whim a couple of years ago because of their age, marca and the review Rob and Ken did a few years back.  I smoked through most of the box (gifted a few to dear friends to smoke with me) in less than a year.  Loved every single one.  A few had tight draws, but the flavors and quality were fantastic.  Now a 1993 may be over the hill or just perfect.  Hard to say since I have not smoked a cigar that old.  Light them up and let us all know what your thoughts are.  Cheers!

as far as i know, the tangs were only made in 2002 (be interested if someone has more info) - a version of the usual monarchs. i believe that they were made as a private order for david tang (apols if i have that wrong) and that there was a small quantity surplus to requirements.

Ahhhh okay, I missed the "tang" portion there reading on my phone... Maybe Russia was a bit kinder to my palate than I was giving it credit for... Thought maybe I smoked a few duds

Exact. There was a Monarch, a No.2/pyramid and a corona.

I believe that the no 2 and corona were either more popular or had a smaller production run. I say this because I happened into a Canadian cigar shop that still had tang monarchs on the shelf. I asked about the no 2 and corona and owner said that PCC never sent those to Canada. They only sent the monarch which did not sell well and boxes were sent back to the Asia/Australia region.

Also, when I eventually make a trip to Australia (3-4) years time I'll be sure to bring the few I have left.

Huh, got a box of these last week, 2001 Upman Monarchs (not tubed), friend went through Dubai airport and I guess they had some in the LCDH, he got a box for him self and box for me. £250 for the box, think I might be onto a winner there. Taking a couple on holiday with me to Thailand/Myanmar next week, I'll report back on how they smoke.

That's a good price on those, specially considering they're from 2001. Will be looking forward to your feedback.

I'm not sure there's a "good price" for non tubed Monarchs from 99/00/01. They're famous for being badly rolled (huge % of plugged ones in each box). There is a reason one can still find them in Switzerland and a few other places. The A/T version never had this problem…

Oh you're right, I misread that they were tubed. That being the case, I hope you were lucky to get a good box, @dageshi!

First real post, thanks for having me. The tubed Monarchs are a fine cigar in my opinion. I have some from 2003 (left) as well as some from 2008. I have been smoking the 2003s quite a bit recently and am really enjoying them - great cigar. I only wish I had more. The 2008s I am holding off on for now as they haven't quite gotten there yet in my mind. Enjoy!

The only one I've had in the past was an A/T (bought from JJ Fox in London) similar vintage to the box I just got, and that one was very tight but just about smokable. I just punch cut three out of the box, one was perfect, one a little tight but still good, the third was quite tight indeed but not plugged.

In the past I've found that very tight cigars will loosen up if you let them breathe for a bit once they've been cut/punched. We'll see how these go :)
