watches_whiskies_cigars Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 As someone who has preferred thinner ring gauge cigars - corona gordas and thinner -, I'm curious which current production thin ring gauge cigars stand out. I define thin as 38 ring or lower, mainly to rule out the Trinidad Fundadores. Of these, which are smoking great currently (2014 onwards)? Amongst discontinued thin ring gauge cigars from 2001 onwards, if one were to come across a box at a B&M, which one would be worth considering and from what year? Many thanks.
Popular Post schubb Posted October 12, 2016 Popular Post Posted October 12, 2016 I've enjoyed young LGC MdO #4 recently. They've been surprisingly good for being so young (ETP ENE16) 5
Morgan Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 Cohiba corona especiales and Lanceros mmmmmmm good 2
kwsaw63 Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 +1 on the PL Montecarlos. I also enjoy the RG Panatelas Extra but the draw on them can sometimes be a problem. 1
watches_whiskies_cigars Posted October 13, 2016 Author Posted October 13, 2016 Thanks a lot for the feedback! I've smoked the Cohiba lanceros and LGC MdO #1, but never looked at PLMC or the LGC MdO #4. That needs to be rectified. @Morgan I overlooked the cohiba corona especiales, but considering their price point versus the lanceros, I'll try and get some. I should have picked them up when they went on Clearance on 24:24 but passed on them because they weren't from El Laguito, but I digress; I'm one of those who finds box codes to still be fun.
PigFish Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 Any Partagas Serie du Connaisseur. ERdM Grandes de Espana... While formally considered medium ring, almost any lonsdale, or coronas (42 ring) cigars. I won't rule out finding anything, but you are probably late to the party to find cigars like the Partagas or the ERdM. Connoisseurs generally snap them up when they see them. Last time I saw the SdC I tried to buy 3 boxes only to have the vendor cancel my order... he was out! If you look at the 24/24 from a few days ago, one of my favorites (medium ring) the Diplomatico 1 went for almost $700 box. If I were going to pay this kind of money for a cigar, I would certainly get what I believe is a premium cigar like the D-1 over a no rank EL or RE. JMHO... Best of luck on the search Ammar! PS: let em know if the call times are still good and I will attempt again this weekend! -Piggy 1
Pharmacovigilant Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 Agree the LGC MDO-4 are fantastic. I have 2 boxes - ULA JUL15 smoking great, and ETP ENE16 resting great. 1

Yes, it seems like the tall and thin ones have already been snatched up for cigar prom. I'll be traveling through various parts of Western Europe in a month and you never know what one might come across at some of the B&Ms there. If I see the two you mentioned anywhere, I'll keep you in mind. I saw the Dip-1, too; fortunately I was late enough to the party to keep my $700 which I'm sure will fly out the door before the month is up. I agree on the EL and RE. Thanks again and I'll email you for this weekend.
LandCruiser Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 The Monte Especial is absolute heaven, I had 5 or 6 left from a box with several years on it and smoked them up in the last 2 months. Just outstanding. The LGC MDO2 is excellent, but rarely available. Truth be told, I have not been that impressed with the Serie Du Connoisseur, gave several a try over the summer and just never really had one stand out. Would take the Monte over it any day. Have a couple boxes of MDO4s and PLMC on the way that I am looking forwards to. And, as always, the lack of long and skinnies in the Habanos lineup is just heartbreaking..... especially when you see the new releases all 50 RG+ Makes me sick. Too many people smoking for looks, rather than taste. 1
RijkdeGooier Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 Why rule out the Fundadores? They are great smokes too and generally considered as long and skinny? 1

I agree, Fundis really work well for me, I love them, specially with a bit of age. And they're not cheap, but they are cheaper then the Lanceros. 1
subport Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 I do agree with all that said. Lgc mdo4, pl montecarlos, lanceros and add ERdM demi tasse to the bunch. Note that I have no recent lanceros. Im smoking from 05...stunning only smoked few fundis they were all good to great 1
Williamos Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 +1 ERdM Demi tasse. Delightfully flavoured wee cigar when time is of the essence.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1
Perla Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 what about: MC Esp. No1&2, MC Joyitas LGC No3, 1 or 4 SP Molinos, ERDM Lonsdale, MC No1 or take all the Lonsdale/Cervantes you can find. ERDM demitasse partagas Cuelbra 1

When it was still produced it wasn't found everywhere; the last boxes I've seen in Andorra almost 10 years ago were the boxes that no one wanted because the cigars were obviously overfilled, hard as rock, unsmokable. Same with the last boxes of RA898. You'll have more chances to find some Diplo1, ERDM lonsdales, LGC No.3, Sancho Panza Molinos, Punch SS1… 1

Popular Post PigFish Posted October 13, 2016 Popular Post Posted October 13, 2016 While I understand that as one pursues 'extinct' cigars often price is not the object. And of course, as I read the OP, I took it as 'what should I look for,' outside the realm of current production. Ultimately though, there are some thinner cigars still made worth pursuing (a point made above). And while looking for others, it makes zero sense to overlook what you can still buy! I am big fan of the Monte Esp 1 and 2. Considering that these and some of the thinner Cohibas may also be marked for extinction in the future, I would have to second the suggestion about starting a 'hoard' of the cigars that you can get today. I don't think you can go wrong, even if you are only an occasional smoker of these, to dedicate a percentage of your cigar portfolio to them. You would have to counsel Rob, or one of the many members that has smoked these in recent vintage as I am not the source of that information. I am afraid that I smoke few cigars over 5.5in so smoking a longer cigar is a bit of a treat for me. As that is the case, most of what I smoke when I reach for one of these is one from the 90's. It is not that 'those/mine' are any 'better,' they are just what I have! I needed to find this box of Party SdC to fulfill a promise to send one to a brother in Oz... I opened this box upon hearing of the passing of a member here Chuck aka: Tampa. Back in the earlier days of this forum there were fewer of us who advocated the finding and acquiring of these cigars. As today, most were interested in classic robustos and their meatier brethren. EL's and the like were just coming into fashion and many the medium and thin rings were simply overlooked and only advocated by a few of us. There were few voices in the thin ring camp, Chuck and another past member come to my mind whenever this topic arises. When members would ask for suggestions they would get the plethora of mainstream answers and a handful of us would typically mention these, coronas and lonsdales as the "alt" smokes of the day. So this one is for you Chuck and a brother who has never had one! -the Pig 7

I wasn't ruling out the Fundadores because I dislike them; I have half a box left from 2012 that are starting to really shine now. I was more interested in learning about other thin cigars that members have liked that I may have overlooked with the spotlight sadly shining bright on 50+ rings. Given that the US market accounts for 30+% of HSA's sales, I know that day isn't far when we'll see a 6×60 coming out of the island; we're already up to 58. 1

Spain has always been a good hunting ground for older boxes imho if you are willing to leave the beaten tracks. Even two years ago ( last time ive been there ) one still could find Grandes de España, Partagas SdC 1,2,3 and one or the other discontinued beauty.
stogieluver Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 Another vote for the PLMC's. Love that stick on a weekend morning with a good Bloody Mary.
Colt45 Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 Count me as another fan of the lost PSdC line - here's what's left of my box of No.2s: For whatever reason I had a soft spot for the No.3, and was quite surprised that a box(es) showed up at a recent LFTH ( or was it a 24:24) - then horrified at the price . Though it should go without saying, that is no reflection on our hosts. I guess my point in bringing it up is that as much as I've enjoyed the line (and others now gone), I could not see paying the prices they might now command. For me the cost is not commenserate with the enjoyment they would provide. So my opinion is that I'd rather acquire more easily available, great tasting cigars. Like you, I enjoy corona gordas. I love a good churchill. Skinny, no, but I think the length to girth a good ratio. Love dalias. Coronas. Just adding my thoughts to what Ray and the guys have already touched upon. 3

I love the #3 as well. My last haul of the #3 was when Rob had a good crop (I believe that is where I got them anyway) and that was about the last I saw of them. I think next time I can land a deal on the Exquisitos I am going to start on them again. They are a really great little cigar, just a lot of coin in comparison to other cigars. -Piggy 1
