Popular Post skalls Posted August 7, 2016 Popular Post Posted August 7, 2016 Well, this was a weekend to forget. My dad's been fighting a good fight against cancer but his quality of life in the past year has really suffered and after his last round of chemo really hurt him (this isn't a statement against chemo, without chemo/radiation we'd have lost him 2 years ago). Friday morning my mom called me at work and said that Hospice was at the house and they were estimating he had 4-5 days left to live. I told my boss and he told me to get the hell out of here and go home. I'm so very grateful he did. About 35 minutes later I'm at my parent's house and things have taken a dramatic turn for the worse. 20 minutes later he had passed on. I was able to be there for my mom. In this day and age it's basically impossible to keep a secret. My brother was made aware of the hospice timeframe so he ditched the golf tournament he was playing in and got on the road, but since he lives in the Twin Cities he had a 4 hour drive ahead of him. Mom didn't want me to tell him the news right away so he could focus on driving. News of dad's passing spread like wildfire and a classmate of his sent a facebook message to both of us. She later pulled his name from the message but my brother knew something was up. I don't blame her one bit because there's no way for her to know and she was pretty close to the family, but I suppose that's just a sign of the times. I know its easy to say he's not in pain anymore, which while true, means he's no longer with us. But the memories we have of him and his legacy still live within those of us that were fortunate enough to interact with Dale. Cancer is such an insidious foe. Here's a couple articles the local paper wrote about him. http://www.inforum.com/sports/4089301-hawley-legend-dale-skallerud-dies-after-11-year-fight-cancer http://www.inforum.com/sports/4075660-hawleys-skallerud-never-stopped-working-prep-athletes-wont-stop-fighting-cancer 6
ABQHank Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 It sounds like your father was quite a guy. There is really nothing anyone can say at times like these to make them any better, but you obviously have a lot of people thinking of you and supporting you, and your father was very much loved and respected. We all one day lose our parents, I'm down to one who is fading fast myself. It is inevitable, but never easy. Take some time for yourself to grieve, and always remember what a positive force your father has been in your life. You are indeed lucky to have had such a father. 1

MrCrowley39 Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 I'm very sorry to hear about your loss. I agree cancer is evil, it seems to always target the ones that make the biggest impact on those around us. Sent From My Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 Using Tapatalk

Ethernut Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 It was so nice to be able to put a face with the name the other night on the WebEx Skalls. I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad. You are correct Cancer is so tough on everyone. So much for you to go through right now. When the smoke clears I'd be happy to fire up a WebEx and have a cigar with you. Would love to hear some stories about him. Prayers to you and your family. Ether-
