after the rugby, i think all aussies can say, ich bin ein icelander person. go the vikings. and the welsh.

and on a slightly different note, as good as he is, i think messi has put the thick black line below any argument about best ever. pele or maradona but messi surely has ruled himself out. i seee he has retired from international competition and not a single major trophy. the great players step up in the big games. he has not, at least nowhere near to the standard demanded of the GOAT.

Great news ...always love seeing England lose at anything...Well done  to Iceland

I heard this morning that Iceland's coach is employed on a  part time basis and is actually a dentist ...England's coach was on 3.5 million pound a year ...well would have been three now ...and resigned 2 minutes after the game ..weak !!

If one looks at the performance of the England soccer XI outside major tournaments, they are actually very good.  Of their last ten non-tournament matches against Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, France, Portugal and Germany, England only lost three.  On an ELO rating, England is the eight-best side in the world.  So really their problem isn't that the team is crap or the players are unmotivated -- it's a severe case of choking under pressure, performance anxiety.

Ah well ... at least our Rugby team is shaping up nicely (#whitewash #swinglowsweetchariot) under new Australian management!

one of the great radio clips was in a british sports radio talkback show years ago. scotland was about to play the faroe islands and had not been doing well. this bloke got on and went to town with the biggest rant and rave you have ever heard. what an utter disgrace if we can't beat a tiny nation like this mob. how did we end up in such an abysmal state that we are seeded against them? their players are useless amateur crap. this is the lowest moment in our proud nation's life.

when the host finally got a word in, he suggested the bloke actually wait and see whether scotland won the game before he started bagging his country.

no, you fool. i'm from the faroe islands. how the hell can we be considered as bad as scotland!

Twice in 4 days. Twice in 4 daaays. We're leaving Europe. Twice in 4 days. A nice little chant that was heard; to the tune of 'I want to go home'.

Don't worry Steve, you're now the 2nd worst manager in English history.

I think McClaren is still the worst there has ever been. As utterly useless and devoid of any common sense Woy was, he at least managed get England to qualify for a tournament!

Completely agree but was just having a pop at Woy.

England have always preferred to have an English manager for whatever reason. Sven and Fabio being the only exceptions in their history.

Woy was always a poor choice in my eyes. He's an a total nonce and never proven himself as an outstanding manager. If the FA are looking for another Englishman that is currently unemployed then there is no one decent. Most have been appointed for the upcoming season. Shearer and Ferdinand have put their hands up but I don't think that's the answer. Southgate is the other candidate to step up from the youth team and take charge.

Whoever's appointed needs to be disciplined and select players based on performance not their name.

I think it doesn't particularly matter if there are good English managers out there or not, you only get the job if you're one of the boys. Clough is the best example of not being friends with the right people in order to get the job

Southgate is just a younger version of Woy with, amazingly, less achievements than him! :perfect10:

It's not going to ever change until the FA changes, and that's never going to happen

Why am I not surprised? Lol

For a football fan, Ewan McGregor's words in Trainspotting certainly ring true - "It's shite being Scottish!"

My favourite story is about the Scotland fan who had travelled as a one-man Tartan Army to a World Cup for which Scotland had yet again failed to qualify. He turned up at Holland match, complete with Braveheart woad, claymore, shield and Saltire.

An interviewer for the BBC decided to have some fun. "Who are you supporting?" he asked.

"Scotland!" dead-panned the fan.

"But you haven't even qualified!" said the interviewer.

"Aye, but that's when we're at our most dangerous!" came the response.

Classic.
