Mattygukas
There are many different tastes and styles out there and something I like to ask other cigar smokers is "When do they use a punch vs a straight cutter vs a V cutter, etc." Maybe include your favorite example. I will say I prefer straight cuts on most cigars but petit sticks I use a punch. (When the pack isn't super tight) I recently punched a the Monte 5 and the BPC. What say you all? LLC
Pyramids I use a V cut but anything else is almost always a straight cut (very occasional punch).
JohnS
Same. I use a v-cut for piramides cigars. I tend to use a punch for most parejos. The perfectos I like to v-cut or punch. I tend to use a straight cut if I'm not happy with the draw.
NSXCIGAR
I use a punch exclusively for parejos and a guillotine for figurados.
Stogieninja
Guillotine on everything. Unless, heaven forbid, my friend Terry (a 70-yr-old navy vet/John Wayne fan I've herfed with monthly for the last several years) forces me to smoke one of his 60rg behemoths again. Then I punch. But aside from that, guillotine on everything.
Fuzz
Haven't used a punch in years. Been used a straight cut or my fingernail in a pinch. Will have to give your v cutter a try next Wed, John.
JohnS
Sure, no problem Fuzz. It's a Xikar v-cutter, so it leaves a nice clean cut!
MrGlass
I use a straight cut for everything, although for piramides I do it at an angle. Not a huge fan of a punch (though I couldn't explain why), and I've never actually tried a v-cut.
golfdude888
Love the xikar vcutter as John kindly lends me at our meets - thinking of getting one myself Sent from my LG-D855 using Tapatalk
joeruby
Petite coronas and skinnies I go for a punch cutter. Tried the V cutter on larger rg's, not bad most of the time with the occasional draw problem so would use the straight cut to correct. Straight cut to be sure, to be sure.. Gunson
I vacillate between straight and v.
Blazer
I used to use a punch for everything above 50 and guillotine for everything under. I am now using the V cutter for 50+, but have never even thought to try it on a pyramid. What's your method for getting a decent cut with that shape? Place your piramides cigar up against the cutter, as far as it will go, then make a quick, hard and decisive cut. Like this guy below...
Mattygukas
I too sometimes use a V on belicosos but my V cutter gets little work. (I have tried it on big ring sticks to reduce the draw before and it works pretty well) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Orion21
Great thread. I punch everything up to 52 rg, angle cut my pyramids and use scissors on anything above 52 rg. I am a BIG fan of having the smallest hole possible on the heads of my cigars to concentrate flavors. Sometimes this requires adjustments while smoking because tar can build up, but it's not common. I am not a fan of straight cuts because they can crunch the cigar and sometimes leads to taking too much off the head. With many cigars being less filled than they probably should be this leads to overly loose draws vs a punch.
danny
<42rg - A V-cut cutter, cut twice to make an "X" on top of the cap. 42-50rg - Scissors. Very seldom, I'll use a punch for the +/- 44rg 'ish cigars. >50rg - Guillotine style cutters That about sums it up for me although there are exceptions depending on the vitola at times. RickG
I prefer my punch, but other than that, this is my goto cutter, and I've tried a lot. Cheap Credo. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
airtrade
Mostly straight cut with Cuban crafters, Palio guillotine or xikar scissors. Sometimes V cut on PC and smaller. Small punch on a bigger cigar that feels light, Favoritos especially. I also enjoy running a pocket knife blade around the head and peeling the cap off. ThePolskiOgorki
Why do you guys prefer to angle cut or v cut a torpedo? Or any cigar for that matter? Personally I have never tried a v-cut. Hence my curiosity. I started out with a punch and found my cigars had draw issues because it wasn't a very big punch. Straight cutting helped. So now I just straight cut everything. I wonder if the Kartastrians ever asked themselves what cutter to use when they smoked on their recent Cuba trip.

I find it makes a perfect cut for my enjoyment of a piramides cigar. I tried it after reading about it on this forum. It's one of those things you have to experiment with for yourself. By doing an angle cut, I can minimise the amount that I'm cutting while still opening it up enough to get a good draw.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Love this cutter! I bought it specifically for my lanceros. Unfortunately I have not used it on my habanos, I have been strictly straight cutting them, like someone else said, sometimes it crushes the head, gonna have to give my punch a try.....it just seems the wrappers on habanos are so thin, so I'm nervous.
