El Presidente Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 It is the the cigar version of a Hitchcock Horror Movie You purchased a box of cigars almost a decade ago and have been patiently storing them. Anyone can purchase an aged box of cigars if you have the contacts and the coin....but there is something special about doing it yourself You know the provenance is right. You have been more protective than a lioness over her cubs. Temperature, humidity, spot on. Some people call you anal?.....Why? just because you have an App that beeps if the humidity or temp move more than 1.5 points? Bugger them! A special milestone for you is coming up. This is the cigar moment you have been preparing for. The big day arrives. Everything is perfect. You light up your decade aged cigar ............ You don't like it It could be one off? Hell every roller has a bad day. You anxiously go to another from the same box....it is a special moment, special day.....you light it up and after ten minutes you sit back, relax and decide.... You don't like it Worse you enjoy your 3 year old boxes of the same cigar more. What have been your Ageing Fizzers?

HavanaSunday Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 Hoyo de Monterrey Epi Especial - 2009. After nearly seven years they haven't developed and they haven't lost any harshness. Crazy that I have another box same year different code and they're phenomenal.
TheLiquidGator Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 Por Larranaga Encantos. I have sampled 5 and they just will not come around. For me anyway. But, am not in a rush. Am just passing through on my way to Australia.

LordAnubis Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 I've decided im not a fan of too much age. I prefer 2-6 years of box age then i finish them up. Failing miserably at that though with the little smoking i do and a humidor sitting at home unattended. My only fizzer at the moment is the H&F 225. Just. Don't. Like. It. 1
Miner Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 Punch Royal Selection No 11 from 2000 This one goes full circle. When I got them four years ago they were horrible and I gave quite a few away. Tried one last year and it was amazing. Only got 13 left, I probably smoked 4 from the box. I wish I kept them now. Cheers 2

sam Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 A 50 cab of RASS. POL MAR 11. I patiently waited while they sat in my humidor till this past March. They look and smell great. Construction seems good. But 9 of the 10 I've smoked so far were wind tunnels that tasted like crap. I'm going to give most of them away. ---sam 1
Eric E Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 Vegas Robaina Don Alejandros from 2007. Just a bland box. I thought they would be great, but boy was I wrong.

PigFish Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 Well, I just opened a box of '06 RGPCs that are just average! I have found these cigars are excellent overall (generally) but this box is just hit and miss. A buddy of mine loves them, me... meh! Cigars are for smoking, not wishful thinking. Yes, I too may sit on my last full box of something, then I get a wild hair and just pluck one out. As far as the RG's are concerned, well, perhaps I will drop the box remainders in a singles drawer, make room for another box of '15's and open a box of '07 RGPC's! For me there is no magic in aged cigars. I just miss the ones that I once could buy en masse, but no more. The magic was in the brand/vitola and has little to do with an ink stamp on the bottom. -Piggy

ElAbogado Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 I have two that jump to mind. One is a box of Upmann Magnum 48 LE 2009. Tend to start out musty and mild, and fail to develop much from there. Hoping they're simply in a second sick period or something. The second offender is also from Upmann, a box of 2013 HUHC which are also just way too bland - hardly the "Cuban crack" that people usually talk about. I'll probably buy a new PSP box next time they pop up and give the rest of the '13 box away. Most of my collection is from '13 or newer, but in my limited experience with things older than 4 years, I've been preferable to the young stock.
skalls Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 I'm with Anubis. Tend to not worry about things getting"old". Been finding that most are smoking quite well after 18 months so I'm having a hard time justifying holding on to them after they are on. 1
BonVivant Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 once one figures out what not to buy, the result would be no more fizzers - takes years, if not decades 1
NSXCIGAR Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 My two most notable busts were 2001 EL RyJ Robustos and a cab of 2002 Punch SS1. Terrible from the outset, held onto them for 10 years, and never got any better. I was really starting behind the 8-ball with those two years, though. Also had some 07 PL Asia RE Robustos that were pretty awful and never came around. I know there are a lot of fans of those but they were pretty lousy for me, and remained so.
