godpheonix Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 i only bought the RyJ because i think that's the one that's gonna come out on top long term. i had 3 in the last 2 years, one was outstanding and the other 2 had the same DNA but a little closup because they haven't aged enough. so with some age down i think these are gonna be exactly like that outstanding one i smoked. i'll try another this year and i'll decide if i should buy a couple of other boxes over the next year.
bman75 Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 Only had one RACA. Fantastic, but I'm too cheap to buy boxes of them. What's the chance that RACA could be re-introduced at some point as regular production (ala HU Mag 50) at a more reasonable price? That would make four regular production RA vitolas, including the very popular RASS. Could position RA for broader distribution (relegate VR down to a Local brand to make room). Not sure why HSA chose QdO as the next marca they want to push globally.
MrGlass Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 I would agree that the Magnum 56 has proven to be a standout from that list. I picked up a sampler of these and was impressed enough to bite the bullet and get a box when they last came up in the 24:24. They're sitting in the OLH right now and will stay there for a few years to come. The Club Allones were also pretty impressive and I'm happy to have gotten a couple of these boxes away as well. As for the Robustos Supremos, I tried them again last year and I think they still need a couple of years before they hit their stride. 2
David88 Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 I have had the Mag 56 and RACA from 2015 and bought a box of each, they have been my favourite LE's that I can remember. They are excellent cigars and I am glad I have bought boxes, but the price trend is becoming ridiculous. Looking at the 2016 LE's this does not seem to be slowing down either. While they are great cigars the considerably higher price makes them hard to justify. I've heard only good things about the Topes and the Capuletos seems promising but I'm not sure I will get more than a few singles.
PigFish Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 ... hit and miss speculation on unproven cigars is a game I refuse to play. Should they all not be standouts? Is that not their sole purpose??? Or, are they just cigars? We are all ash in the end! -Piggy 2
Corylax18 Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 If the Mag 56 is the best (or even close) of the last few years, than I am one happy camper. While I have thoroughly enjoyed the flavors of the examples I tasted, I have had much more enjoyable experiences from a plethora of regular production cigars. Were the 56s great? Yup. Have I enjoyed 2 or 3 year old Lusis more? Almost every one. Monte 2s with 7- 10 years? I would take em over the 56s every time. The Dip REs I smoked this November in Havana were completely overshadowed by other cigars. 14 production Punch Punch, Farmmies, recent Fundis and Coloniales, the list goes on. I wont be paying the extreme premiums these cigars demand, considering the slightly better results I've seen from "the best." I have relatively limited experience with the limited production sticks, but all my experience has pointed me away from future purchases.
boopdeep Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 Sorry to refresh old thread.... Over the last 8-10 days or so, I smoked all of the ELs from 2015 (Mag56, RaCa) and 2016 (Topes, Dantes, Caps). The only dud in the group was the Dantes, which lacked flavors and as a result, needless to say, any complexity. The rest have been pretty darn good. My rankings: 1. Mag56. (TOS Dec 2015). Superb smoke. Way too fat. Flavor bomb. I've smoked a handful of these so far, and the one from this last week lived up to the rest. All have been excellent. Already developing into one of my all time favorites. 2. R&J Capuletos. (LAU Sept 2016). Classic R&J flavors. True to form. Overall excellent. Have smoked two from this box and both great. Looking forward to rest. 3. Ramon Allones Club Allones. (TOR Oct 2015). Again, true to the RA family. Good complexity from a young smoke. I struggled between this and the Topes, but ultimately the ring gauge was the differentiator. 4. Trini Topes. (SOM Jul 2016). Another flavor bomb. A bit harsh and young, but great flavors. Comes in at #4 on the list simply because the others are so good. This is still a great cigar, but can use some down time to get rid of some of the heavy spice and mongrel. Again, way too fat. Have only smoked 1 so far. 5. Monte Dantes. (TOS Nov 2016). Did not enjoy the cigar at all. No flavor. Hopefully a dud, and the rest of the box will be compelling. What are your rankings for 2015/2016 ELs?
planetary Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 FWIW: - Every Mag 56 I've had has been in the 92 to 95 point range. - RACA have been 87-89, but I've only had a few. - Have a 10'er of the Robustos Supremos which I've sworn off touching until 5 years have elapsed... though at that Jurassic size, it had better deliver in spades. 1
Notsocleaver Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 Does the Punch Serie D'Oro still stand up to the new releases?

I completely concur with your statements. Well said!
